Job description

Make it happen: help shape how Northern prepares its people for the future of rail.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is one of the biggest changes happening across the North's railway. For you, that means the work you do as a TRU Training Analyst will have a real impact on how our traincrew are trained, supported and ready for what comes next.

You'll sit at the heart of the planning, bringing together training data, operational priorities and future projects to make sure Northern has the right people with the right skills at the right time. From new services and rolling stock changes to the wider TRU programme, you'll help us understand what's coming, spot the risks and turn complex information into practical plans.

What you'll be doing

This is a role where data meets people and planning meets the real world. You'll:

  • Own and manage training requirements across our depots, identifying risks, capacity pressures and high-demand periods before they become problems.
  • Work with the TRU Operational Delivery Manager and project teams to shape training plans and briefing materials for traincrew.
  • Act as a key link between the TRU Project Team, operational teams and other project functions, making sure traincrew skills and training requirements are understood and built into plans.
  • Work with trade union colleagues on training agreements and help make sure these are reflected in project planning.
  • Bring together regional training data to support better business decisions and create accurate forecasts for the years ahead.
  • Develop tools and reporting that make it easier for operational teams to understand their training position and plan effectively.
  • Keep training records and project information accurate, highlighting gaps, risks and opportunities that could affect delivery.
  • Help shape training models and support local teams to make the best use of their resources.
About you

You'll be comfortable making sense of data, but you'll also enjoy working with people. You can take something complicated, understand what it means and explain it clearly to someone else.

You'll bring:

  • A Data Analyst Apprenticeship or equivalent experience in data analysis and processing.
  • Experience using data to identify trends, solve problems and support business decisions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work with people at different levels and across different teams.
  • Experience of managing projects or workstreams, keeping things on track and focused on the outcome.
  • The ability to share knowledge and best practice, helping others build their confidence with data and technical skills.
  • A proactive approach. You'll be someone who spots what needs doing, gets stuck in and follows things through.

Most importantly, you'll be curious about how things work and keen to make them better. You don't need to know everything about rail already – we need someone who can bring the right skills, ask good questions and turn information into action.

What's in it for you?
  • Free Travel: Unlimited free travel for you, your partner, and your dependents on Northern services. Plus up to 75% discount on other networks in the UK and Europe.
  • Generous Pension Scheme: We top up your contributions by 1.5 times.
  • Enhanced Family Benefits: We offer 9 months of full pay for maternity leave and 2 weeks for paternity leave.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Save up to 42% on a bike and spread the cost.
  • Exclusive Discounts: From shopping to wellbeing, Northern Perks has you covered.
  • Employee Assistance Programme: 24/7 support for family, lifestyle, and more.
  • Training and Career Development: We offer tailored training to our colleagues and opportunities to gain recognised qualifications. Plus enhanced career pathways no matter what part of the business you're in.
  • Recognition: We know how important it is to show how much we appreciate our people. That's why we have our Northern Lights and Northern Sparks Awards, recognising and celebrating brilliance every day.
Why Northern?

We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,650 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We've recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B, we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob there's a place for you here in the railway.
