Job Overview

The Trisomy Screening service in Clinical Pathology at Nottingham University Hospitals offers screening for pregnancies affected by Down's, Edwards, and Patau's syndromes for antenatal populations in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire. This service is part of the National Foetal Anomaly Screening programme.

We are seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Assistant to support this vital service. We welcome applications from hardworking, enthusiastic individuals with keen attention to detail.

Main Duties
  • Perform pre-analytical reception and processing duties, including receipt, barcode labelling, and preparation of blood samples for analysis.
  • Accurately enter patient demographics and pregnancy details into laboratory risk calculation software.
  • Load samples onto laboratory equipment and archive samples appropriately.
  • Maintain housekeeping duties such as stock control, cleaning, and waste disposal.

NUH is a large teaching hospital comprising the Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital, employing over 20,000 staff. It plays a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the local population, including maternity services.

This role is based at the City campus laboratories.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in the delivery of Trisomy and pre-eclampsia diagnostic services within the Clinical Pathology department.
  • Manage sample reception, booking, and processing via laboratory IT systems.
  • Distribute request cards, sample bottles, and information leaflets.
  • Prepare and dispatch screening letters.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, monitoring emails, and handling telephone queries.
  • Ensure general housekeeping, including cleaning, waste disposal, and stock management.
