Job summary

Warburtons in Banbury is seeking a Transport Shift Manager to lead our distribution operations. You will manage a large driver team, oversee 55 routes, and drive safety and performance across the fleet.

On a 4 on 4 off rota, you will coach drivers, deliver training on load security and safe driving, and ensure regulatory compliance and incident investigations are conducted thoroughly.

Qualifications

• Experience in leading and developing distribution teams.
• Strong knowledge of safety, transport regulations and tachograph rules.
• Experience with driver management and telematics systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of secondary/class 2 drivers and oversee 55 routes from Banbury site.
• Monitor safety trends and drive continuous improvement using data.
• Ensure compliance with Transport Operator Licence, WTD and Health & Safety regulations.
• Provide coaching and development for drivers and conduct investigations after incidents.

The Role

As Transport Shift Manager, you’ll be at the heart of our operations, ensuring smooth, efficient processes while upholding our reputation for exceptional service. Your key responsibilities will include:

• Managing a team of Secondary/Class 2 Drivers, taking responsibility for all people management activities throughout the employee lifecycle to drive improved performance and build a positive and motivated team where everyone is engaged. We have around 92 class 2 drivers in total, running 55 routes out of the site.
  • Continuous Improvement: Use telematics and performance data to monitor safety trends and drive improvements across the fleet.
• Championing a Safety Culture: Positively influence behaviours and embed safety into daily operations, making it a core team value.
• Regulatory Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to Transport Operator Licence requirements, Tachograph and Working Time Directive regulations, and all Health, Safety & Environment legislation.
• Risk Management: Conduct regular safety audits, vehicle checks, and driver briefings to identify hazards and implement preventative measures.
• Training & Development: Deliver ongoing coaching and refresher training for drivers on safe driving practices, load security, and emergency procedures.
• Incident Response: Lead investigations into any accidents or near misses, ensuring corrective actions are taken and lessons learned are shared.
• Working on a 4 on 4 off rota incorporating both days and nights
• Previous experience as a Team Manager or Key Operative with experience in managing and leading teams, coaching, and mentoring
• Knowledge of Tachograph and WTD regulations
• Good working knowledge of SAP, specifically the ERP module
• Understanding of Health, Safety, and Environment
• Experience with Driver telematics systems
• If you have your Transport Managers CPC that would be beneficial (but not essential)

With almost 200 drivers and warehouse colleagues working on various shift patterns, it’s the biggest purpose-built distribution site for Warburtons, at 85,000 square feet.

We are currently delivering over 4 million items to our customers and Cross Docking 85,000 stacks of bread, this is equivalent to 559 double deck trailers or 965 single deck trailers, every four weeks. And we’re still growing!

Banbury is now a dedicated Test Centre for License Acquisition, developing our own talented bunch of drivers and supporting them through their required driving licences.
