Job summary

Dnata in Belfast is seeking a Transport Manager to lead daily HGV operations, ensuring safety, cost control, quality and KPI delivery across the transport department.

You will plan routes, supervise drivers, maintain compliance with Operator Licence and driver regulations, drive improvements and foster strong customer relationships.

Qualifications

  • Tacho and Working Time directive regulation knowledge.
  • Level 4 qualification (A Level or equivalent).
  • GCSE English and Maths grade C/4 or above.
  • CPC Knowledge.
  • Demonstrated people management experience (performance, holidays, rosters, attendance).
  • Experience in fast-moving environments like manufacturing, logistics, or FMCG.
  • Strong problem solving abilities.
  • Experience in transport or logistics sectors.
  • Stakeholder management experience.
  • Computer literacy: Outlook, Word, Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operation of the HGV fleet and transport department.
  • Plan and coordinate vehicle and driver schedules to meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure vehicles and drivers are allocated efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitor vehicle utilisation, mileage, fuel consumption and costs.
  • Address operational issues, breakdowns, delays and customer needs promptly.
  • Collaborate with customers, suppliers, drivers and senior management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Maintain Driver Management including onboarding and performance reviews.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across the transport operation.
  • Oversee fleet condition, maintenance and compliance with inspections.

The Role

Our Transport Manager will pro-actively manage the daily operation, with responsibility for the delivery of safety cost, quality, compliance and people KPIs – in line with company, legal and airline standards. To be actively involved and maintain an effective and productive team which focuses achievement on results and develops and sustains effective customer relationships.

Key Responsibilities
Transport Operations
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the HGV fleet and transport department.
  • Plan and coordinate vehicle and driver schedules to meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure vehicles and drivers are allocated efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitor vehicle utilisation, mileage, fuel consumption and operating costs.
  • Deal promptly with operational issues, breakdowns, delays and customer requirements.
  • Work closely with customers, suppliers, drivers and senior management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs.
Compliance & Operator Licence
  • Maintain full compliance with the company's Operator Licence undertakings.
  • Ensure drivers comply with UK drivers' hours, working time and tachograph legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to drivers, vehicles, maintenance and compliance.
  • Ensure regular driver licence checks and relevant entitlement checks are completed.
  • Monitor and manage driver infringements, taking appropriate corrective action where required.
  • Ensure vehicle inspections, safety checks and defect reporting procedures are properly managed.
  • Liaise with external maintenance providers and ensure vehicles are maintained to the required standard.
  • Prepare for and assist with DVSA, Traffic Commissioner and other regulatory inspections.
  • Ensure company policies and procedures are implemented and consistently followed.
  • Driver Management
  • Recruit, onboard and manage HGV drivers where required.
  • Conduct regular driver meetings, briefings and performance reviews
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout the transport operation.
  • Ensure drivers receive appropriate training, including relevant CPC and operational training.
  • Manage attendance, performance, conduct and disciplinary matters in conjunction with senior management/HR.
  • Provide drivers with clear instructions and support to ensure operational and legal requirements are met.
Fleet Management
  • Oversee the condition, availability and presentation of the HGV fleet
  • Ensure planned preventative maintenance and statutory inspections are completed on time.
  • Monitor MOTs, PMI inspections, repairs, defects and vehicle downtime.
  • Ensure daily defect reporting and vehicle safety-check procedures are followed.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records and ensure documentation is readily available for inspection.
  • Health & Safety
  • Ensure transport operations are carried out in accordance with company health and safety policies.
  • Carry out and review relevant risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and implement corrective actions.
  • Promote safe driving and vehicle operating standards across the business.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Tacho and Working Time directive regulation knowledge
  • Level 4 qualification i.e. A Level or equivalent experience
  • GCSE English and Maths grade C/4 or above
  • CPC Knowledge
  • Demonstrable evidence of people management experience, e.g. dealing with performance issues, holidays, rosters and absence management
