Job description

As a vital member of our team operating a 24/7 service, you will provide a safe and professional service, collecting and delivering blood products, equipment, and staff to hospitals, blood centres, and blood collection sites across the country. This may include emergency blue light deliveries. You should be able to work under tight deadlines and handle interactions professionally with the public. The role requires working evenings, weekends, nights, and bank holidays on a 24/7 roster. A uniform will be provided, along with an induction, training, and development opportunities. You will undergo an extensive induction and training program, with ongoing assessment and development to support your career ambitions.

Main duties of the job

Your responsibilities include driving our vehicles for the collection, transportation, and delivery of blood and related products and equipment, including security, daily vehicle checks, and maintenance. Specific duties include:

1. Driving various vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, except in South London (Tooting), Basildon, Lancaster, and Southampton, where light goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes are used.
2. Operating digital handheld devices and maintaining electronic and paper records.
3. Loading, unloading, assembling, and dismantling equipment, including heavy objects up to 20 kg, with or without lifting aids.
4. Occasionally undertaking emergency Blue Light deliveries, with training provided.
5. Using customer care skills to ensure positive interactions with colleagues, donors, hospital staff, and the public.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid UK driving licence with 6 points or less, subject to DVLA check (essential).
• Desirable: C1 driving licence; B licence is essential.
• Ability to meet NHSBT minimum driving standards, assessed at interview.

Experience

• Previous vocational driving experience or proven driving proficiency.
• Experience with digital handheld devices, Microsoft Office, or other IT packages.
• Good geographical knowledge of the local area and road network.
• Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance checks.
