West Mercia Police is recruiting Constable - OPU (Roads Policing Officer) to join the Operations Patrol Unit. The role covers roads policing across Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire, with tasks including responding to road traffic collisions, leading investigations and supporting road safety campaigns.

You will work as part of a specialist team, utilising ANPR, and providing Family Liaison support on serious incidents. Shift patterns include nights and weekends.

Full Job Title: Constable - OPU (Roads Policing Officer)

Location: Telford, Bromsgrove, Hereford

West Mercia Police is seeking motivated and professional Constables to join the Operations Patrol Unit as Roads Policing Officers. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist team dedicated to improving road safety, reducing casualties, investigating serious collisions and tackling criminality on the road network.

Main Responsibilities
  • Respond to and take ownership of road traffic collisions across the force area, attending all fatal and serious collisions and leading investigations where required.
  • Conduct intelligence-led proactive policing activity to reduce casualties, target offenders and support wider force priorities.
  • Respond to Grade 1 and Grade 2 incidents where specialist roads policing skills are required or where threat, risk and harm necessitate deployment.
  • Support and deliver national road safety campaigns and local operations aimed at reducing those killed or seriously injured on West Mercia's roads.
  • Provide Family Liaison support when deployed in support of investigations involving serious injury or fatal collisions.
  • Act as the primary deployment resource on the motorway and Strategic Road Network, ensuring professional and effective incident management.
  • Utilise Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to identify offenders, disrupt criminal activity and improve road safety.
  • Maintain the highest standards of investigation, evidence gathering and case file preparation.

Work closely with local policing teams, partner agencies and specialist departments to achieve operational objectives.

What We're Looking For

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  • Strong operational policing experience with a proactive mindset.
  • Experience or knowledge of road traffic collision investigations.
  • The ability to make effective decisions using the National Decision Model, and be able to justify their decisions via the NDM when challenged.
  • Experience of managing thorough and professional investigations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a specialist team environment.
Essential Requirements

Officers appointed to this role must be willing and able to:

  • Work a shift pattern including nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Deal with traumatic incidents and exposure to distressing material.
  • Be trained as an Family Liaison Officer
  • Obtain and maintain Taser accreditation.
  • Already be an Advanced Response and Tactical Pursuit Phase (TPP) driver
  • Be able to complete the Licensed Search Officer training, and maintaining the accreditation.
  • Be trained and maintain a PSU ticket.
Working Location

This role operates across the three counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire, with officers stationed in either Hereford, Bromsgrove or Telford police station.
