Job summary

InterGen is offering a 2-year fixed term Trainee Operations Technician position at Coryton Power Station in Essex, United Kingdom. The role provides a structured training programme to develop skills for operating a modern power station safely and efficiently, with mentorship and progression opportunities.

The candidate will learn to operate, monitor and supervise plant equipment, support start-ups/shutdowns, and collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams while adhering to HSE standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Level 2 Engineering.
  • End of 2nd year as an engineering student OR at least 1 year in power generation operations.

Responsibilities

  • Follow and promote HSE standards and contribute to safety initiatives.
  • Learn to operate, monitor and supervise plant equipment from central control and field.
  • Assist with start-ups, shutdowns and return-to-service activities.
  • Support maintenance and engineering teams during planned and reactive work.
  • Use maintenance management system for operational, compliance and safety tasks.
  • Participate in testing, projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work with experienced colleagues to become a fully competent Operations Technician.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for 2 x new Trainee Operations Technicians to join our team at Coryton Power Station on a 2 year-fixed term contract. We are expanding our Operations team to strengthen our technical capability and support the long-term performance of our recently upgraded plant.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will complete a structured training and competency programme to develop the skills required to operate a modern power station safely and efficiently, and set you up for success to be able to confidently:

  • Follow and promote the company's Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards, actively contributing to site safety initiatives and HSE improvement activities.
  • Learn to operate, monitor and supervise plant equipment from both the Central Control Room and in the field, carrying out routine inspections and operational checks.
  • Support plant start-ups, shutdowns and return-to-service activities by carrying out pre-start checks and operational procedures following maintenance and outage periods.
  • Assist with first-line fault diagnosis and supporting maintenance and engineering teams during planned and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Use the site's maintenance management system to complete operational, compliance and safety-related tasks, while developing an understanding of operational procedures, documentation and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in testing activities, projects and continuous improvement initiatives to help maintain plant performance, reliability and safety.
  • Work closely with experienced Operations, Maintenance and Engineering colleagues to build your technical knowledge and progress towards becoming a fully competent Operations Technician
Why you?

As our new Trainee Operations Technician, you'll be technically minded, eager to learn and interested in developing a long-term career within the power generation industry. Ideally, you'll have a basic understanding of process engineering within mechanical or electrical disciplines. You have a strong commitment and understanding of health, safety and environmental standards alongside good problem solving and fault-finding abilities. Collaboration is key - you work well across disciplines and bring strong communication and teamwork skills, however you're also able to eventually work unsupervised and take responsibility in a dynamic, operational environment that helps keep Coryton running smoothly.

Education/Experience

Minimum of Level 2 Engineering

This position will best suit a college level student at the end of 2nd year studying any Engineering discipline OR, at least 1 year in power generation industry operations and maintenance, or related heavy industry
