Job summary

Farrans Construction is seeking a Trainee Estimator to join the Pre-Contract team. You will learn to assess project costs, engage with suppliers, and contribute to winning bids for major projects across the UK and Ireland.

Ideal candidates hold a degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Construction Management and have placement or site experience. You'll receive mentoring, training and clear development pathways to progress in estimating and commercial delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified (or working towards) in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
• Industrial placement or 1–3 years' construction exposure desirable.
• Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proactive, detail-oriented with good organisational ability.

Responsibilities

• Support the preparation of cost estimates and tender submissions.
• Assist with reviewing tender documentation and project specs.
• Obtain and analyse quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
• Prepare quantities, cost data and pricing using estimating software.
• Attend site visits to gather information for estimating.
• Collaborate with estimators, project teams and supply chain partners to develop bids.
• Maintain supplier/subcontractor databases and records.
• Contribute to improving estimating processes and best practices.

Are you looking to kick-start your career in construction and work on major infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland?

Farrans is seeking a Trainee Estimator to join our Pre-Contract team. Working alongside experienced Estimators, Quantity Surveyors and Bid Managers, you'll learn how to assess project costs, engage with suppliers and subcontractors, and contribute to winning bids for projects worth millions of pounds.

This role is ideal for graduates in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Construction Management, particularly those with placement or site experience. With mentoring, training and clear development pathways, this is a fantastic first step towards a successful career in estimating, commercial management or project delivery.

Responsibilities

• Support the preparation of cost estimates and tender submissions for construction and civil engineering projects.
• Assist with reviewing tender documentation and project specifications.
• Obtain and analyse quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
• Help prepare quantities, cost data and pricing information using estimating software.
• Attend site visits and gather information to support the estimating process.
• Work closely with estimators, project teams and supply chain partners to develop competitive bids.
• Assist with maintaining supplier and subcontractor databases and records.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes and best practice.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified (or working towards completion) in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
• Industrial placement, year-out experience, summer placement or 1 to 3 years' experience within a construction environment is desirable.
• Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good attention to detail and organisational ability.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong communication skills and confidence working with colleagues and external partners.
• A genuine interest in construction, commercial management and project delivery.
• Enthusiastic, motivated and eager to learn and develop a long-term career with Farrans.
