Job description

NHS Wales - Trainee Clinical Scientists

Genomics

Exciting opportunities to use your honours degree in a pure or applied science relevant to genomics for patient and public benefit. Gain a master's degree and specialist work-based experience through a nationally recognised training programme. Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on a 3-year fixed-term contract.

The NHS in Wales is offering 1 salaried post-graduate training programme in Genomics for high-calibre science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in patient care.

The Trainee Clinical Scientist will be employed by the host organisation for a fixed term of three years. During this time, they will work through a work-based programme of learning. This will be combined with an academic programme at master's (MSc) level over the three-year period.

The first part of the academic programme will introduce the basic science and theoretical background of the rotational disciplines and their application in clinical science within health, as well as providing an introduction to healthcare services and values. The master's degree includes a research project within year 2/3.

AWMGS together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park, the Pathogen Genomics Unit (PenGU), and Welsh Government are working to deliver the Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, patients, the public, and healthcare professionals across Wales. Furthermore, the publication of the Genome UK has established the need for a unified approach to Genomics across all four nations.

This is a three-year post-graduate programme, and the successful candidates will be employed by an NHS Wales organisation for the duration of their training and will be based in one of:

  1. 1x Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Wales Genomic Health Centre

The training is aligned with the Scientific Training Programme (STP) and supported by the National School of Healthcare Science. Posts are due to commence in September 2025.

Trainees may be required to rotate, which may involve secondments at other locations, within Wales for short periods of time. On completion of the STP, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude, commitment and flexibility there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are motivated to pursue their career within Wales.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
