The Integrated Musculoskeletal, Pain and Rheumatology Service (IMPReS) provides services across the East Lancashire footprint, including Burnley, Pendle, Rossendale, Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Blackburn and Darwen.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 8a Advanced
Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP), or an existing Band 7 Physiotherapist looking to develop your clinical expertise and progress into an 8a APP role through our Band 7 -8a APP 6-12 month Preceptorship Programme (dependant on previous experience).

The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary Pain Management Service and play a key role in supporting the development of a Community Pain Service. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced physiotherapist with an interest in persistent pain to develop advanced clinical skills, leadership and autonomous practice within a supportive and progressive service.

You will work alongside the Clinical Lead for Pain Management, Pain Consultants, Physiotherapists, Team Leads, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Psychologists and Specialist Occupational Therapists. The multidisciplinary team is committed todelivering high-quality, person-centred care and improving the quality of life of people living with persistent pain.

For candidates appointed into the Band 7–8a APP Preceptorship Programme, you will work closely with the Pain Management Team and Consultant Physiotherapist to develop the clinical knowledge, skills and competencies required for advanced practice in pain management. You will receive structured support and development throughout the preceptorship, with progression to the substantive Band 8a APP role on successful completion of the required competencies.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of the pain management service while advancing your career within the pain and musculoskeletal physiotherapy service.

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP), you will provide a high level of clinical expertise and autonomous decision-making, determining the most appropriate course of action for patients’ care. This may include assessing and managing patients without prior review or direct contact with a Pain Management Consultant.

You will use advanced clinical reasoning skills to undertake comprehensive assessments of presenting problems, critically interpret clinical findings, formulate working and differential diagnoses, and develop, communicate and implement individualised management plans. These plans will consider the person’s needs, goals and preferences, available local services, and relevant local and national guidelines and policies.

You will promote shared decision-making and support individuals to take an active role in decisions about their care. This will include helping patients identify the priorities and outcomes that are important to them, explaining available treatment and management options in clear, non-technical language, and discussing the potential risks, benefits and consequences of each option to support informed decision-making.

You will provide clinical and strategic leadership within the service, contributing to and taking responsibility for patient safety, quality improvement, education and training, clinical governance and service development. You will act as a clinical role model, supporting colleagues to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in the assessment and management of people living with persistent pain.

A key element of the role will be to lead the development and delivery of an education programme for primary care staff, with a focus on biopsychosocial assessment and management of musculoskeletal and pain-related conditions. The programme will aim to enhance clinical knowledge and confidence within primary care, promote appropriate self-management and early intervention, and support the effective and efficient use of Pain Management Service resources
