Job summary

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust seeks a Consultant in Pain Medicine to lead chronic and acute pain care within IMPReS and the Anaesthetic Department. The post combines outpatient multidisciplinary clinics and theatre sessions.

Ideal candidates will have Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Medicine, GMC license, and be on the Specialist Register in Anaesthetics or eligible. A bio-psychosocial approach and collaborative team working are essential.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

This post will facilitate the provision of care to chronic and acute pain patients . The work split will be approximately 6.5 sessions for chronic pain management and 3.5 sessions for the inpatient anaesthetic team. The job plan includes 1.5 SPA.

Clinical experience and training equivalent to Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Medicine is essential for this post and it would be desirable to be a Fellow of Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA).

The successful postholder will be a currently practicing clinician, holding GMC registration with a license to practice. They will have attained FRCA or equivalent and be included on the GMC's Specialist Register in Anaesthetics.

A commitment to a bio-psychosocial approach to pain management, multi-professional working, evidence-based practice and the principles of shared care and close working with other disciplines and specialties are also essential elements of this role.

The post will be based within the chronic pain management service which is an integral part of the wider Integrated MSK, Pain and Rheumatology Service (IMPReS) in the Division of Diagnostic and Clinical Support and the Anaesthetic Department in the Surgical Division.

The post is responsible to the Clinical Lead for Chronic Pain Medicine and the Clinical Director in Anesthetics and supported by the Business Manager for the Integrated MS

The postholder will provide Anaesthetic and Chronic pain sessions -clinical input ( outpatient clinics Multidisciplinary and theatre sessions) to both the acute and chronic pain management service (detailed timetable to be agreed with the postholder).

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of approximately 520,000.

Services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The Royal Blackburn Hospital and Phase V at Burnley General Hospital are significant PFI developments.

In 2006 a service reconfiguration, 'Meeting Patients Needs' was implemented which resulted in the Blackburn site becoming the centre for all acute services in East Lancashire. The Emergency Department at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and since 2012 has become a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network with the Trauma Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ED is supported by UCC at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington.
