Job summary

Stonehouse Recruitment is seeking an experienced Trading Standards Officer for a 12-week contract with the Local Authority in the North West. The role involves statutory duties across Food Standards and Weights & Measures, including inspections, investigations and enforcement activities.

The candidate will mentor three apprentices and support team development while working 2 days in the office and 3 days from home. Relevant Local Authority trading standards experience is essential.

Trading Standards Officer

Location: North West
Working Pattern:2 days a week in office, 3 days working from home
Contract: 12 Weeks, with potential for extension

Stonehouse are currently working with a Local Authority in the North West seeking an experienced Trading Standards Officer to join their team on an initial 3 month contract.

This is a hands‑on regulatory role covering Food Standards and Weights & Measures, with responsibility for carrying out statutory Trading Standards functions. The successful candidate will also play an important role in supporting the development of the team by coaching and mentoring three apprentices.

Key Responsibilities As a Trading Standards Officer, you will be responsible for:

• Carrying out statutory Trading Standards functions across Food Standards and Weights & Measures.
• Undertaking inspections, investigations and enforcement activities in accordance with relevant legislation.
• Investigating complaints and service requests relating to food standards, weights and measures and other Trading Standards matters.
• Assessing compliance with relevant legislation and identifying appropriate enforcement action.
• Preparing reports, notices, statements and other statutory documentation.
• Providing professional advice and guidance to businesses and stakeholders on Trading Standards legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Coaching and mentoring three Trading Standards apprentices, supporting their practical development and understanding of regulatory work.

Candidate Requirements We are looking for an experienced Trading Standards Officer with relevant Local Authority experience and the ability to undertake statutory functions across Food Standards and Weights & Measures.

You should have:

• Relevant professional experience within Local Authority Trading Standards.
• Strong practical knowledge of Food Standards and Weights & Measures legislation.
• Experience carrying out inspections, investigations and enforcement activities.
• The ability to undertake the full range of relevant statutory Trading Standards functions.
• Experience preparing enforcement documentation and maintaining robust legal case files.
• A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle, where required.

The role is offered on an initial 12-week contract, with the potential for an extension subject to the requirements and approval of the Local Authority's senior leadership team.
