Job summary

A leading NHS Trust seeks a Theatre Scrub Practitioner to provide exceptional patient care in a collaborative environment. The role requires a qualified RN or ODP with NHS experience who can demonstrate effective communication skills while working closely with a multidisciplinary team. Theatre Scrub Practitioner

We are looking to recruit Band 5 Scrub Practitioners.Here at Wigan Hospital you will be rewarded with real job satisfaction. This role involves working 37.5 hours per week. Working pattern: 4 days from 7 - shifts are 0800-1800/0900-1900/0800-2045/2030-0800 (night duty)

Main duties of the job

Here on the acute site we undertake both adult and paediatric surgery. Our theatre teams also work closely with some of the region's leading consultants and are exposed to the latest innovative, evidence -based clinical techniques. Our real driving force is our ability to invest in our people, as we support our Theatre Nurses and ODPs to build their skills through mentoring and formal training such as ALS or PLS. This vacancy is open to all internal and external candidates. Please note all candidates could be asked to work at another Trust site as required.

The post holder will participate in, and influence, care delivery by:

  • Developing sound clinical skills and competency within their defined field working without direct supervision to ensure the application of professional standards in all aspects of care delivery within the clinical environment.

Communications and Key Working Relationships

The post holder will demonstrate effective communication and organisation awareness levels by:

  • Using a multimedia approach to influence outcomes.
  • Working closely with own team, theatre co-ordinator, senior team leader and matron/theatre manager to promote good work relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintaining compliance with the Data Protection Act 1988 and information governance ensuring confidentiality is adhered to.
  • Maintaining accurate and legible records of care. To respond to requests for information.
  • To receive and pass on information to others, maintaining confidentiality.
  • To build and maintain effective working relationships with all colleagues across the division and Trust.

Responsibility for Finance

The post holder will participate in:

  • Contributing to the effective and efficient utilization of theatre resources identifying shortfalls and liaising with senior team leader / theatre co-ordinator.
  • Participate in ensuring the effective use of all financial resources in providing and delivering the service
  • Demonstrate awareness of the need for Cost Improvement Programmes within the service

Responsibility for Human Resources

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Adhere to Trust policies and maintenance of the professional Code of Conduct.
  • Adherence to legal requirements of Trust, NMC and HPC.

Responsibility for Health & Safety

Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

Maintaining consistency within standards of care for both elective and emergency care.

  • Ensuring that all work is carried out in a safe manner with due regard to the Health and safety regulations.
  • Ensuring risk assessments of all situations are completed.
  • Taking appropriate action and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards.
  • Maintaining a duty of care towards personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

The post holder will:

  • Monitor the standards and quality of care and lead on improvement through benchmarking, audit and research.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical policies / procedures / guidelines / standards of care within the theatre department.
  • Participation of departmental research and audit.
  • Application of evidence based practice within the care delivery.
  • Demonstrate under pinning theoretical knowledge within their clinical practice of Infection control, Health and Safety, Ethical and Legal issues.
  • Demonstrate adaptability of the role within distinct clinical environments.
  • Recognise the appropriateness of transferable skills when providing individualised high quality patient care.
  • Demonstrate application of professional standards in all aspects of care delivery within the clinical environment.

Responsibility for Teaching

The post holder will promote life-long learning through the use of appropriate coaching, teaching and assessment in practice by:

  • Ensure own clinical credibility by maintaining own professional development and completion of mandatory training session.
  • Participate in the induction and subsequent training of new staff members and pre-registration students acting as a mentor to students as required.
