Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a Theatre Practitioner to join the Operating Theatres team in Glasgow. You will deliver high quality perioperative care across surgical specialties and support patient safety throughout the surgical journey.

Permanent role with 24 hour rotational pattern, offering access to theatre-specific training, induction, and mentoring. Open to individuals committed to ongoing professional development and flexible working where service needs allow.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Theatre Practitioner to join our dynamic Operating Theatres team within the North Sector. You will play a key role in delivering high quality perioperative care across a wide range of surgical specialties, ensuring patient safety throughout every stage of their surgical journey. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

Permanent (3 x 36 Hours & 1 x 21.6 Hours)

Key Responsibilities

As a Theatre Practitioner, you will provide specialist perioperative care to patients before, during and after surgery, working autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Once fully trained and competent, you will assist in preparing operating theatres and specialised equipment, support surgical procedures as both an anaesthetic and scrub practitioner, and monitor patients throughout their perioperative journey. You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, ensuring it is delivered in line with professional standards, policies and best practice guidelines. The role requires close collaboration with surgeons, anaesthetists and colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and person‑centred care. You will also contribute to service improvement, support and mentor junior staff, participate in education and training activities, and help maintain a safe clinical environment through adherence to infection prevention, health and safety, medicines management and governance requirements.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

• Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner with current professional registration.
• Knowledge of perioperative practice and patient‑centred care delivery.
• Understanding of professional codes of practice, clinical governance and patient safety principles.
• Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
• Understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
• Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and prioritise workload effectively.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
• Willingness to undertake theatre‑specific training, including Anaesthetic and Scrub Practitioner courses.
• Basic IT skills and ability to use electronic patient records and theatre information systems.
