Job summary

Theatre Practitioner is invited to join Circle Reading Hospital for a 9 month fixed term contract. The role requires 37.5 hours per week with a flexible shift pattern.

Responsibilities include assisting the surgical team, maintaining sterility, and supporting the anaesthetist across scrub, anaesthetics and recovery. Applicants should be registered with the NMC or HCPC, with theatre experience and strong infection control knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
  • Experience or training in a theatre environment in scrubs, anaesthetics, or recovery.
  • Understanding of infection control, manual handling and patient safety principles.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment.

  • Assist the surgical team by preparing instruments, maintaining sterility, anticipating surgeon needs and ensuring equipment safety.
  • Support the anaesthetist in equipment preparation, patient monitoring, airway management and positioning; provide post‑operative care and discharge readiness.
  • Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and patient requirements.
  • Check surgical and anaesthetic equipment before use and report faults.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and efficient lists.
  • Support a positive, respectful and efficient theatre environment.

Salary: Up to £40,000.00 per year (depending on level of experience, training and qualification)

We have an opportunity for an Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatre department.

This is a full time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties of this role include:
  • Assist the surgical team by preparing instruments, maintaining sterility, anticipating surgeon needs, and ensuring equipment safety; support the Anaesthetist in equipment preparation, patient monitoring, airway management, and positioning; and provide post-operative care, monitoring vital signs, managing pain and nausea, and ensuring patient readiness for discharge.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures at all times.
  • Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and specific patient requirements.
  • Check all surgical and anaesthetic equipment prior to use and report faults immediately.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve safe and efficient surgical lists.
  • Support and contribute to a positive, respectful, and efficient theatre environment.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
  • Experience or training in a theatre environment in at least one area (scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery).
  • Understanding of infection control, manual handling, and patient safety principles.
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to safe surgical practice.
