Job summary

Unknown is seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to own quality across the development lifecycle. The role is Birmingham or London-based with hybrid work (2 days per week) and offers up to £60,000 plus bonus and a strong benefits package.

You will design and implement automated test frameworks using C#/.NET, focus on backend automation, and contribute to CI/CD integrations while building ownership and future leadership potential.

Birmingham OR London | Hybrid (2 Days per Week) | Up to £60,000 + Bonus

Our client is a leading software business trusted by organisations across the UK and internationally. As part of a major shift-left testing initiative, they are looking to hire their first dedicated Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to help drive quality throughout the development lifecycle.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a developer with hands on coding experience and testing exposure (building and maintaining automation frameworks) who wants to take on ownership. The plan is to build out the department, leading to an opportunity to manage a team in the future.

The Role

This is a role for someone who wants to progress within their career, with knowledge of building automated frameworks, practical use of C#/.NET, and usage of BDD frameworks (gherkin/cucumber preferred but others welcome). The focus for this role is solely at the backend, having backend automation experience is essential.

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and implementing automated test frameworks
• Developing test coverage across unit, integration, and API layers
• Identifying gaps in existing test coverage and proposing improvements
• Supporting the adoption of shift-left testing practices
• Collaborating with developers to improve software quality and testability
• Helping integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines
• Influencing tooling, frameworks and quality engineering best practices
• Experience in backend test automation
• Must be able to write code
• Knowledge building, extending or integrating automated testing frameworks
• Understanding of unit, integration, API and service-level testing
• Knowledge of software engineering principles and architecture
• Ability to identify testing gaps and improve quality processes
• Strong communication skills and confidence challenging existing approaches when appropriateGherkin or BDD methodologies
