Job summary

Sizewell C Limited seeks a Temporary Works Designer to join the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) Engineering and Assurance Team. Temporary Works Designer Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C

As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years.This role will be within theCWA Wide Section.

What will you do?

The project requires a Temporary Works Designer to join the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) Engineering and Assurance Team. The role will deliver temporary works design and design coordination across the three CWA delivery sections: Earthworks and Enabling, Main Civil Works, and Marine and Tunnels. It will provide technical temporary works design input and design checking throughout the project technical lifecycle, from Early Contractor Involvement through to detailed design delivery and construction support.

The role involves developing temporary works schemes that meet Programme Alliance Agreement (PAA) requirements. This includes coordinating interfaces with permanent works, ensuring buildability and construction team acceptance, working within budget constraints, and presenting proposals for client approval. The project team includes CWA personnel, lead design consultants, internal and external temporary works designers, and subcontractors.

Given the varied temporary works scope, the role would suit someone with broad experience delivering temporary works design on major infrastructure projects. Experience designing haul roads, working platforms, formwork and falsework, and excavation solutions would be beneficial.

The Temporary Works Designer will:

  • Design, check and technically assure temporary works solutions in accordance with BS 5975, Eurocodes, CIRIA guidance and other relevant standards.
  • Deliver in-house temporary works designs across CWA-wide requirements and the Earthworks and Enabling, Marine and Tunnels, and Main Civil Works scopes, including formwork, falsework, scaffolding, soil slope stability, tower crane foundations and access platforms.
  • Develop, implement and manage processes for standard design solutions and proprietary temporary works systems,
  • Apply knowledge of common temporary works systems, such as Doka, PERI, Mills, Layher, HAKI and GASS.
  • Check subcontractor and third-party temporary works designs, including formwork, falsework and temporary working platforms, providing technical assurance where required.
  • Prepare and review calculations, drawings, reports, sketches, models, design risk assessments and other technical deliverables in accordance with project requirements.
  • Advise site, office, design and construction teams on buildability, sequencing, construction methodology and safe, innovative and cost-effective temporary works solutions, including information to support Target Outturn Cost estimating.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, HSWA, LOLER, PUWER and the Balfour Beatty Temporary Works Management Procedure.
  • Ensure internal and subcontractor designs meet the temporary works design brief, required timescales and technical approval requirements, including Approval in Principle submissions for clients and external stakeholders.
  • Identify, assess and communicate design and residual risks, maintaining a strong focus on Zero Harm and applying the principles of prevention through design and engineering.
  • Mentor junior engineers, support continuous improvement of design processes and tools, and report on temporary works design resolution and interfaces with permanent works and subcontractor designs.
  • Support development and implementation of digital processes/culture/technology to support project delivery during the Design, Construction and Handover phases.
  • Support development and implementation of a process for the production and management of standard design solutions.
  • Support design interface management between CWA and it’s stakeholders
What are we looking for?

Knowledge & Skills

  • This role requires an individual with proven experience in delivering temporary works design services on site during construction stage.
  • This role requires experience of site-based activities and a knowledge of proprietary equipment commonly used in temporary works applications.
  • Conversant with the management and procedures associated with temporary works as defined in BS5975:2019
  • Familiar with current design standards, codes of practice, and published guidance relevant to temporary works. Able to design in a several materials using British Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Disciplined approach to quality assurance and documentation. Attention to detail, ensuring legal compliance and satisfying project requirements.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with both work colleagues and external technical consultants and suppliers.
  • Effective communicator, both listening to others and explaining own considerations to seek agreement on what is best for project.
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a contractor environment.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, and various other design software packages (i.e. Hilti profis, RMD Beam, GFSafe, CAD PWS, ROBOT) used for temporary works designs and checks.
  • Implement the project Temporary Works Management Plans, BIM Execution Plan and other associated documents.
  • Proficiency in IT and numeracy.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering a high-quality product to tight deadlines .
  • Degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Professionally qualified or actively working towards professional qualification
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrable and relevant experience of which at least 2 must be in a design role.
  • Major Project Construction industry experience with experience of design production for civil, structural, or tunnelling works in a contractor led environment.
  • Valid CSCS card
