Job summary

Orion Group is seeking a Temporary Works Design Engineer to join our Highland-based client’s team on a permanent staff basis. You will develop safe, practical temporary works designs for civils and infrastructure projects, producing calculations, drawings, specifications and supporting technical documentation.

The role involves collaboration with site teams to resolve engineering challenges and ensure safe, buildable solutions.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required.
• Professional experience in temporary works design, preferably within civil engineering or construction.
• Strong civils engineering knowledge and understanding of construction sequencing.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver temporary works designs for civils and infrastructure projects.
• Produce calculations, design drawings, specifications and supporting technical documentation.
• Design temporary works including excavations, access, propping, formwork, falsework and retaining structures.
• Review requirements and site constraints to develop practical, safe solutions.
• Coordinate with site teams and other engineering disciplines as required.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards and project requirements.

This could be an opportunity to take ownership of temporary works design across challenging civil engineering projects, working closely with construction teams, project engineers and other design professionals.

Your role

As aTemporary Works Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing safe, practical and cost-effective temporary works solutions that enable complex construction activities to be delivered successfully.

You will:

• Develop and deliver temporary works designs for civils and infrastructure projects.
• Produce calculations, design drawings, specifications and supporting technical documentation.
• Design solutions including temporary works associated with excavations, access, propping, formwork, falsework, retaining structures and construction sequences.
• Review design requirements and site constraints to develop practical solutions that can be safely constructed.
• Work closely with site and project teams to understand temporary works requirements and resolve engineering challenges.
• Review temporary works proposals and provide technical input throughout the design and construction process.
• Coordinate with permanent works designers, subcontractors and other engineering disciplines where required.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, project requirements and temporary works procedures.
• Support the temporary works process from initial concept through design, review and implementation.
• Attend site when required, giving you the opportunity to see your designs translated into real construction solutions.

What you'll bring

You will ideally have:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional experience in temporary works design, preferably within civil engineering, infrastructure or construction.
• Strong civils engineering knowledge and an understanding of construction methodology and sequencing.
• Experience producing engineering calculations and design documentation.
• The ability to develop practical solutions rather than simply theoretical designs.
• Good understanding of temporary works principles, design risk and construction constraints.
• Experience working with design and project teams to deliver engineering solutions.
• Strong technical communication skills and the confidence to discuss designs with engineers and construction professionals.
• Chartered status or progression towards professional registration would be advantageous, but the most important factor is your relevant temporary works and civils engineering experience
