LHSC's Nursing Clinical Extern Program is seeking motivated nursing students who are ready to take the next step in building the foundation for a rewarding nursing career. As a Nursing Clinical Extern, you will join an interprofessional clinical team and gain meaningful, hands-on experience in an acute care hospital while developing the skills, confidence and professional insight essential for future nursing practice.
Working alongside experienced healthcare professionals at University Hospital and Victoria Hospital, you will contribute to high-quality, patient-centered care while gaining valuable exposure to bedside nursing, team-based care and the operational flow of a large academic health sciences centre.
The Clinical Extern role is designed to support your growth and help prepare you for the transition from nursing student to nursing professional. Through supervised practice, you will strengthen foundational competencies such as clinical communication, teamwork, collaboration, time management and the development of therapeutic relationships with patients and families. You will also gain insight into clinical decision-making, care coordination and the critical role nurses play within complex healthcare environments.
Clinical Externs work in the capacity of an unregulated healthcare provider and collaborate closely with unit nursing and interprofessional teams under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed Regulated Health Provider. Under appropriate supervision, Clinical Externs may perform pre-identified controlled acts authorized to nursing under Ontario's Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), when delegated by a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.
More than a student employment opportunity, the Clinical Extern Program offers a meaningful pathway into the nursing profession. It will help you strengthen your clinical confidence, professional judgment and readiness to transition into future nursing roles while making a positive difference in the experiences of patients and families today.
