Job summary

The Barbican Concert Hall seeks an experienced Lighting Technician with strong lighting programming and design skills to deliver world-class music and business events, on-site and off-site. You will join a busy Music Department team delivering high-level technical support for concerts and events across the Barbican.

Standards include deep knowledge of GrandMA 2, Artnet/DMX, and lighting plans, with excellent communication and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic creative environment.

Qualifications

• A relevant recognised qualification or equivalent experience in production lighting.
• Good working-knowledge of programming generics and moving lights on a GrandMA 2 system.
• Professional-level knowledge of operation of leading brands of lighting consoles.
• Experience with Artnet/DMX protocols.
• Experience reading and interpreting production lighting plans.
• Understanding of electrical principles and electrical safety.

The Barbican is a multidisciplinary international arts centre in the City of London.

The role

The Barbican Concert Hall is looking for an experienced and passionate individual to join the Music Department as a Technician with a proven lighting specialism, with experience in programming and lighting design to deliver world-class music and business events in the Concert Hall and associated areas, onsite and offsite.

The post holder will be working within a busy, skilled team to deliver high-level technical support to all music concerts & events across the Centre in the Barbican Concert Hall, foyers and commercial venues.

This position requires a high degree of experience in lighting, with a general understanding of other technical production disciplines, such as video, AV and stage sound equipment for a wide range of music, commercial, and streamed events.

The post holder will be expected to multi-task and work dynamically with a wide range of clients, artists and stakeholders, so excellent interpersonal skills are essential.
This is an irregular shift-based role spread over 7 days so weekend and evening work is required for this role.

Role requirements

• A good level of technical knowledge and competence in production lighting, with a relevant recognised qualification or equivalent experience.
• A good working-knowledge of programming generics and moving lights on a GrandMA 2 system.
• Professional-level knowledge of the operation of leading brands of lighting consoles and equipment.
• Demonstrable understanding of Artnet/DMX protocols.
• Experience of working with and focusing generic production lights.
• An understanding of other disciplines of technical production.
• Proven skill in lighting design and programming lights with live experience in different styles of music and events, from contemporary, classical and commercial.
• Proven working experience of medium to large generic and moving light systems, with an understanding of lighting data networks.
• Experience of reading and interpreting production lighting plans.
• A good understanding of electrical principles and electrical safety.
• Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and politely with co-workers, casuals, freelancers, artists, promoters and commercial clients.
• Ability to convey information related to instrument or equipment set-ups on stage in a straightforward manner to staff, clients and performers.
