Job summary

Leicestershire County Council is seeking a Technician to join the Engineering Team at County Hall, Leicester. You will process vehicular access applications, support engineers on highway maintenance schemes, and liaise with customers and stakeholders to provide updates and clear actions.

The role requires relevant qualifications or evidence of equivalent skills, with scope for professional development and flexible working options including hybrid arrangements where appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Experience in an engineering environment (highways, civil, construction, utilities, or asset management).

  • Ability to interpret and produce technical and non‑technical reports, notes, drawings, and read maps/engineering drawings.
  • Good written and verbal communication and ability to prioritise.
  • Confident IT user (Microsoft 365) and keen to learn service‑specific systems.

Salary: £28,605 – £31,029 per annum (pro‑rata for part‑time) (pay award pending)

Working Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent

Closing Date: Sunday 16th August 2026

About The Role

An exciting opportunity for a Technician to join our Engineering Team at Leicestershire County Council. The role focuses on processing vehicular access applications in line with relevant standards and procedures, while supporting Engineers in the delivery of highway maintenance schemes. The technician will liaise with customers and stakeholders, provide updates, respond to enquiries, and help ensure projects and applications are delivered on time, within budget, and to a high standard.

About You
  • NVQ3 or equivalent in Civil Engineering or other relevant subjects, or GCSE (Grades A–C or 9–4). If you lack formal qualifications, you must provide evidence of equivalent skills and a commitment to gain the essential qualifications.
  • Experience in an engineering environment (e.g., highways, civil, construction, utilities, or asset management). We also welcome transferable skills from other sectors that demonstrate strong organisational, customer‑care, problem‑solving, and technical abilities.
  • Project/commercial experience delivering to agreed time, quality and cost outcomes. Organisations that invest in on‑the‑job coaching will develop commercial/project skills.
  • Experience liaising with customers, colleagues, contractors and stakeholders, preparing materials for meetings/exhibitions, and turning problem investigation into clear actions or recommendations.
  • Strong attention to detail in capturing, storing and retrieving information using digital systems and templates, ensuring data quality and auditability.
  • Ability to interpret and produce clear technical and non‑technical reports, notes, drawings, and read maps, plans and engineering drawings. Training is available on our standards, CAD and GIS tools.
  • Good written and verbal communication, solid organisational skills and ability to prioritise. Confident IT user (e.g. Microsoft 365) and keen to learn service‑specific systems and software.
