Job description

We are currently recruiting an experienced Mechanical and Electrical Technician to join our team at Chesham Sewage Treatment Works, HP5 1TH. The role involves working across various sites in the Colne North area.

The successful candidate will ensure that all equipment at our sewage treatment works operates safely and efficiently, utilizing proactive and reactive maintenance methods. Responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, fault diagnosing, testing, installing, modifying, or repairing electrical and mechanical plant equipment.

Within the maintenance team, you will follow robust planned maintenance schedules, participate in minor installation projects, conduct electrical fault finding, and handle emergency breakdown repairs to ensure continuous plant operation.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical & Electrical Technician
  1. Carrying out scheduled planned maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment in compliance with company procedures to minimize plant breakdowns.
  2. Investigating plant failures and performing repairs efficiently to prevent process interruptions, including diagnosing complex faults during incidents.
  3. Providing technical advice, referring to up-to-date technical knowledge, and supporting or training technical trainees if required.
  4. Working on equipment such as pumps, control gear, 3-phase motors, starters, electronic control systems like VSDs, automatic valves, penstocks, flow, level, and pressure measurement devices, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
  5. Participating in a standby rota following appropriate training.

Base Location: Chesham - HP5 1TH

Working Pattern: 38 hours, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am – 3:36 pm, plus standby and overtime opportunities, increasing earning potential by approximately £8,000-£10,000.

All PPE, tools, vehicle, and fuel card are provided.

What you should bring to the role
  • Significant experience in electrical systems, ideally as a time-served apprentice, working in a multi-skilled capacity.
  • Previous experience from an electrical apprenticeship, ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ, or C&G level 3 in mechanical engineering, with upskilling in mechanical NVQ2/3.
  • An upskilled mechanical qualification to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical and electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently.
  • For candidates with only mechanical or electrical experience, development towards dual-skilled status is supported.
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues is essential.
  • A valid driving license; all necessary equipment including vehicle and tools are provided.
