Job summary

WM Trains Limited is recruiting an experienced Technician to join the Fleet team at Tyseley. The role covers maintenance examinations, fault finding, engine changes, refurbishment, and fleet-wide improvement campaigns.

You will work on WM Trains Class 172 and Class 196 fleets, as well as CrossCountry's Class 170 fleet, ensuring trains are safe and ready for service. Key duties include servicing, repairs, overhauls and documentation, with a focus on health and safety, quality, and environmental

Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship completed or equivalent engineering qualifications.
  • Road Vehicle driving licence and authority to drive Railway Service vehicles.
  • PTS / Designated Person / AP trained (if required).
  • Experience with maintenance management systems is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Attend servicing, maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of traction and rolling stock.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance on rolling stock to specifications.
  • Where skilled, attend to in-service failures and act as Designated Person as required.
  • Ensure accurate completion of work records and sign-off of work.
  • Comply with Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures.

Description

We are recruiting for an experienced Technician to join our team at Tyseley.

In this role, you'll be involved in a wide range of duties, including maintenance examinations, fault finding and repairs, engine changes, interior and exterior refurbishment work, heavy maintenance programmes, overhauls, modifications, and fleet-wide improvement campaigns.

You'll work on a diverse fleet of diesel multiple units, including WM Trains Class 172 and Class 196 fleets, as well as CrossCountry's Class 170 fleet, helping to ensure our trains are safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend to the servicing, maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of traction and rolling stock
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance on rolling stock to laid down specifications.
  • Where skilled, attend to In Service Failures and undertake the duties of Designated Person as required
  • Ensure the accurate completion of work records to include the generation of, completion of and sign off of work as complete and compile records of all work done in accordance with local instructions, to include use of any electronic Maintenance Management System. If required compile technical reports relating to work carried out
  • Ensure compliance with processes and procedures in respect of the Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems
  • Where applicable instruct new entrants, apprentices, contractors, and visitors, on maintenance procedures, act as mentors as required
  • Make recommendations to management and technical staff that support the improvement of technical documentation, tooling or other work practices that would result in improved productivity/efficiency, greater safety, or higher fleet reliability. (an example would be making recommendation on improvement to VMIs or on updating level checks)
  • Where required due to workload carry out other tasks as directed where skilled to do so
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Completed appropriate apprenticeship or hold relevant qualifications in electrical / mechanical engineering as specified by current company policy.
  • Road Vehicle driving licence and authority to drive Railway Service vehicles.
  • PTS / Designated Person / AP (Appointed person) Trained (if required)
  • Power Plant equipment trained
  • PC / IT literate (Job specific training provided)
  • Experience of Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) desired
  • Some specific additional skills in this grade group ie Lathe Operator, Carriage repairer/painter

Ensure continuity and an effective delivery of service, successful candidates will be required to commit to a minimum 14-month period in role after achieving competence. This also includes existing colleagues who move by internal promotions and transfers.
