Job summary

Durham University’s Department of Engineering seeks a Technical Manager to lead the hands-on Design Studio and Makerspaces that support autonomous systems, UAVs, robotics, prototyping, teaching and research. This practical technical leadership role involves managing facilities, training users, ensuring safety, and helping expand capabilities for student projects from idea to working prototype.

Qualifications

• Strong practical engineering background with hands-on skills.
• Solid Health and Safety knowledge and judgment.
• Ability to support student and research projects from idea to prototype.
• Experience leading or managing a workshop facilities
• Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities

• Oversee Design Studio and Makerspace operations including access control, booking, induction, safety procedures.
• Lead development of DEMO facilities including procurement and future capability planning.
• Provide technical leadership for autonomous systems teaching and prototyping.
• Ensure health, safety compliance and safe working standards.
• Support teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate activities and extracurricular groups.
