Job description

Pro-Group Recruitment are proud to be working with a leading fire safety contractor who are known for their quality, innovation, and consistent delivery.

As a result of growth and success, our client are seeking an experienced Fire Detection & Alarm Design Engineer to join their technical team. This is a key role responsible for producing compliant, high-quality fire system designs, supporting project delivery from concept to completion, and acting as a technical authority across the business.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the technical design, survey, and specification of fire detection and alarm systems in full compliance with BS 5839-1 and related standards. You will ensure all designs are safe, reliable, technically sound, and able to integrate with building-wide systems such as door entry, access control, PAVA, and BMS.

You will also provide expert advice throughout project lifecycles, mentor junior staff, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation and standards.

Technical Design & Survey
  • Conduct detailed site surveys and assess client requirements
  • Design and specify fire alarm and detection systems to BS 5839-1
  • Produce system drawings, schematics, cause & effect matrices, and schedules
  • Prepare technical submissions and design proposals for clients
  • Ensure system integration capabilities with access control, security, PAVA, and BMS
  • Keep up to date with changes to all relevant British and European standards
Client Liaison & Technical Leadership
  • Act as primary technical contact for clients, consultants, and contractors
  • Clearly communicate complex technical information to all stakeholders
  • Support installation and commissioning teams with design intent
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and validation sessions
  • Represent Fieldway professionally during meetings and site visits
Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure full compliance with BS 5839-1, BS 7273, BS 5266, EN 54, and other codes
  • Produce design certification, calculations, and compliance documentation
  • Assess completed installations for design accuracy and performance
Team Development
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Line-manage a small team (2-3 staff) and support wider engineering teams
Essential Requirements
  • BS 5839-1 Fire Detection & Alarm Design qualification (FIA or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in fire detection & alarm (design, survey, commissioning)
  • Strong knowledge of BS 5839-1:2017 and 2023 amendments
  • Ability to produce and interpret technical drawings
  • Confident client communicator and technical lead
  • Full UK driving licence
  • ECS/CSCS, SMSTS or equivalent site safety qualifications
Desirable Requirements
  • FIA Advanced Design, Maintenance or Commissioning
  • Experience as Senior Engineer, Project Manager, or Operations Lead
  • Additional Health & Safety qualifications
  • First Aid certification
