Job description

Are you a Mechanical or Civil Design Engineer looking to develop specialist expertise and take greater ownership of your projects? We're recruiting a Technical Design & Estimating Engineer for a specialist engineering business delivering wastewater pumping systems. You'll develop practical, cost-effective solutions and manage designs from the initial customer requirement through to approval and handover for delivery.

Our client specialises in the design, supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of wastewater pumping systems.

Supporting construction, commercial and industrial customers, the business delivers projects ranging from packaged pumping stations to bespoke installations, alongside ongoing servicing and emergency repairs. It is looking to strengthen its engineering team with an experienced engineer who can provide reliable technical support to customers.

As Technical Design & Estimating Engineer you'll combine engineering design, estimating and customer coordination.

Responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing customer requirements and project specifications to develop suitable pumping-system designs.
  • Producing CAD drawings, layouts, manufacturing drawings and technical specifications.
  • Selecting pumps, motors, controls and associated components.
  • Completing hydraulic calculations to support system sizing and performance.
  • Preparing estimates covering materials, labour and installation.
  • Obtaining supplier pricing and supporting sales with technical proposals.
  • Managing customer queries, design revisions and approvals.
  • Working with manufacturing and project teams to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.
  • Resolving technical issues and supporting design changes during production.

You'll bring a mechanical or civil engineering design background, confidence using CAD and an interest in understanding how a complete engineered system works.

We're looking for someone with:
  • Prior experience as a Technical Design & Estimating Engineer.
  • Experience producing engineering drawings, layouts and specifications.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Strong technical reasoning and practical problem-solving skills.
  • The confidence to discuss requirements with customers, suppliers and colleagues.
  • An organised approach to managing revisions, approvals and deadlines.
  • The initiative to take responsibility for progressing your work.
  • Direct pump-design experience would be valuable, but isn't essential. Engineers from relevant mechanical, civil or drainage design backgrounds will be considered, with training available in pumping systems. Experience in estimating, hydraulics, fluid handling or equipment selection would also be useful.
Salary & Working Conditions
  • £40,000-£45,000 basic salary, depending on experience.
  • Permanent employment, working 45 hours over five days.
  • Office-based in Hull.
  • Specialist technical development with support from experienced colleagues.
  • Ownership of varied projects, with direct involvement in customer discussions and design decisions.
