Job summary

Department for Business and Trade is recruiting 4 experienced Technical Architects to lead secure cloud solutions in a UK-wide context. The role focuses on designing high-level architectures, aligning with governance, and driving technical strategies across multiple programmes.

Hybrid work from multiple UK locations, including London and Belfast, with strong emphasis on collaboration, stakeholder communication and continuous improvement of digital delivery.

Qualifications

• Proven experience designing and delivering secure cloud solutions on AWS and/or Azure.
• Strong track record producing high-level designs and governance through Architecture Review Boards/Technical Design Authority.
• Ability to translate high-level designs into practical low-level designs aligned to standards.
• Experience leading technical teams delivering user-focused services within agile environments.

Responsibilities

• Define and champion the technical strategy for services in line with user needs and business goals.
• Lead technical specialists across projects, owning the technical design of services.
• Design and assure secure, open-source and user-centred systems including integration, interoperability, security and performance.
• Provide technical governance and present designs to boards like the Technical Design Authority.
• Horizon scan for emerging technologies and mentor peers to develop capability.
• Shape the technical direction from discovery through live operations.
• Contribute to portfolio strategy and governance for DBT digital delivery.

Job description

Salary: £85,000 - 85,000 per year

Requirements:

• We need proven experience designing and delivering secure cloud solutions using AWS and/or Azure.
• We need strong experience producing high-level designs and taking them through governance, including Architecture Review Boards or Technical Design Authority.
• We need the ability to work closely with development teams to translate high-level designs into practical low-level designs aligned to standards.
• We need proven ability to lead technical teams and deliver user-focused services within agile environments.
• We need strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• We need a core architecture skillset, with additional experience in one or more specialist areas such as AI-focused architecture, cloud-focused architecture, application-focused architecture, or ERP-focused architecture.
• We need SC clearance eligibility, which requires being present in the UK for 3 out of the past 5 years.
• We cannot sponsor Skilled Worker visas.

• We shape the technical direction of services from early discovery through to live operations.
• We contribute to portfolio-level strategy and governance to help shape the future of digital delivery at DBT.

We are the Department for Business and Trade, and we are recruiting 4 experienced Technical Architects to support major digital and technology programmes. We offer a salary of £67,867 to £85,413, excellent Civil Service benefits and a 29% employer pension contribution. We work flexibly in a hybrid model from London, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham or Salford, with around 40% office attendance each month and flexible or condensed hours available. Our technology stack includes Python/Django, Node.js/React and cloud services such as AWS and Azure, and we optimise our architecture for change, continuous improvement and innovation.
