Job summary

Walsall Council is seeking a technically skilled Technical Accountant (Finance Business Partner) to deliver statutory financial reporting and provide specialist accounting advice across the council. The role covers IFRS, CIPFA Local Authority accounting, VAT and charity accounting, with a focus on accuracy and high-quality reporting.

Qualifications

• Qualified CCAB/CIMA or actively studying towards qualification.
• Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret accounting standards.
• Experience preparing statutory accounts or year-end financial statements.
• Experience in financial reporting and technical accounting.
• Experience working with external auditors and responding to audit queries.
• Experience with VAT legislation and VAT administration.
• Experience preparing management accounts.
• Experience applying accounting standards and interpreting technical guidance.
• Ability to produce clear and accurate financial working papers.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation of the Council's annual Statement of Accounts and supporting working papers.
• Support the annual external audit process, liaising with auditors and responding to audit queries.
• Prepare monthly VAT returns and provide advice on VAT legislation.
• Manage the Council's vehicle leasing programme, including accounting, journals and monthly monitoring.
• Prepare financial journals and technical accounting adjustments.
• Prepare monthly management accounts for Council charities and attend trustee meetings.
• Collaborate with services across the Council, schools and partner organisations for statutory reporting.
• Deputise for senior colleagues at meetings as required.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of IFRS, CIPFA Local Authority Code, UK GAAP and Charity SORP.
• Build strong relationships to provide high-quality technical financial advice.
