Job summary

Our client, a Local Authority in Sussex, seeks an experienced manager to lead the property licensing scheme on an initial 3-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension. You will manage and direct a team delivering environmental health duties to improve private sector housing conditions, including recruitment, development, and mentoring.

The role requires a degree in Environmental Health, housing act knowledge, and proven enforcement actions in residential settings.

Qualifications

Job description

Our client, a Local Authority in Sussex, is looking for an experienced manager to lead their local authority property licensing scheme, ideally with selective licensing experience, on an initial 3-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension. The role covers managing and directing a team undertaking a range of environmental health duties to maintain and improve property conditions in private sector housing, including staff recruitment, development, appraisal and mentoring. You'll act as an expert resource on environmental health matters, undertake proactive surveys and inspections, sign and take responsibility for the correct service of statutory notices, and prepare cases for prosecution, including acting as an expert witness at tribunals, higher courts and public inquiries. You'll also lead on specific projects, represent the department with internal and external stakeholders, and deputise for the Private Sector Housing Manager when required.

Candidates should hold a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health or Environmental Services, along with competency training in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System and sound knowledge of the Housing Act and related legislation. You'll need significant experience undertaking inspections and formal enforcement action in a residential environmental health context, along with experience of legal processes and evidential requirements across civil and criminal courts. Strong line management skills, the ability to communicate complex information to a range of stakeholders, and confidence handling challenging situations are essential, along with good ICT skills.

This role pays £60-£65 per hour (Umbrella) on an initial 3-month contract, likely to be extended, based in Sussex with 2 days on site per week.
