Job summary

Education Support Services (ESS) is seeking dedicated Teaching & Learning Mentors to support learners aged 10-25 across Bristol, Somerset and the Southwest. You’ll deliver personalised learning in one-to-one or small-group settings, with flexible hours and a strong emphasis on safeguarding and inclusion.

The role requires a Level 3+ teaching qualification, experience with vulnerable or SEND learners, and Enhanced DBS with Barred List checks.

Qualifications

• UK-recognised teaching qualification at Level 3 or above.
• Experience delivering education, training or mentoring to young people.
• Experience with vulnerable, disengaged or SEND learners.
• Knowledge of safeguarding requirements (KCSIE) and Working Together to Safeguard Children.

Responsibilities

Education Support Services (ESS) is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching & Learning Mentors to join our team and deliver personalised education and training to young people aged 10-25 who may be disengaged from mainstream education, at risk of exclusion, or facing additional barriers to learning.

This is a flexible, rewarding and varied role where no two days are necessarily the same. you'll work directly with young people on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, delivering engaging and personalised learning that is tailored to their individual needs, interests and goals.

You could be supporting learners with academic subjects, vocational skills, wellbeing or practical activities - depending on your qualifications and experience.

What you’ll be doing

As a Teaching & Learning Mentor, you will:

• Deliver high-quality, bespoke education and training to vulnerable and disengaged learners.
• Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated sessions on a one-to-one or small-group basis.
• Support learners to work towards appropriate qualifications, including GCSE-equivalent learning where required.
• Create a positive, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
• Build professional, positive and appropriately boundaried relationships with young people and their families.
• Adapt your teaching approach to meet individual social, emotional, behavioural and learning needs.
• Monitor and record learner attendance, progress and achievements.
• Complete lesson plans, schemes of work, progress reports and other required documentation.
• Work closely with the wider ESS team to ensure learners receive consistent and effective support.
• Follow all safeguarding, GDPR, quality assurance and organisational procedures.
• Take part in training and continuing professional development.

About you

We're looking for educators and mentors who are patient, empathetic, reliable and passionate about inclusion.

You'll ideally have experience of working with young people, particularly those who are vulnerable, disengaged from education or have SEND or social, emotional and behavioural needs.

You will need:

• A UK-recognised teaching qualification at Level 3 or above.
• Experience supporting or delivering education, training or mentoring to young people.
• Experience working with vulnerable, disengaged or SEND learners.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
• The ability to plan learning and complete accurate records and reports.
• Knowledge of safeguarding requirements, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and Working Together to Safeguard Children.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
• The ability to work independently as well as as part of a wider team.
• Flexibility to travel across Bristol, Somerset and the wider Southwest.
• Flexibility around working hours to meet learner and contract requirements.

You'll also need an Enhanced DBS with Barred List check, or be willing to obtain one, as well as up-to-date safeguarding and Prevent training or a willingness to complete these.

Your experience could include…

We'd particularly welcome applications from people with experience in:

• Alternative provision or one-to-one teaching.
• Working with young people aged 10-25.
• Supporting learners with SEND or social, emotional and behavioural needs.
• Vocational education and alternative learning pathways.
• Delivering practical or creative subjects.Supporting learners who have struggled within mainstream education.

Additional qualifications such as First Aid, vocational subject qualifications or experience with awarding body documentation would be an advantage.

Our learners rely on consistency and stability. Teaching & Learning Mentors are therefore expected to commit to delivering the full term's provision for each contract they accept.

If circumstances mean you are unable to continue a contract, we ask that you provide notice as early as possible to minimise disruption to the learner.
