Job summary

Barnsley College in Barnsley is seeking a Teaching and Learning Coach to support staff in delivering exceptional learning experiences and to contribute to strategic development of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.

You will design development activities, lead initiatives to enhance teaching quality, support observation processes, and help embed professional habits across the college, shaping a culture of everyday excellence.

Qualifications

  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards PGCE Level 5.
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent Level 2 qualification.
  • Evidence of exceptional and innovative teaching practice within further education or another relevant educational setting.
  • Effective coaching, mentoring or leadership skills that have supported improvement in teaching practice and professional development.
  • Experience delivering innovative and well‑received staff development training.
  • Experience undertaking observations of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, making accurate judgements and using outcomes to drive improvement.
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based and research‑informed teaching and learning approaches.
  • Knowledge of external frameworks such as the Ofsted Toolkit, Apprenticeships and JISCETF technology standards to support strategic alignment and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver impactful development activities and offer personalised coaching.
  • Lead on initiatives that enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
  • Work closely with curriculum departments, using subject expertise to support improvement, innovation and professional growth within designated areas.
  • Support and strengthen observation processes as part of the college’s observation team.
  • Carry out high‑quality observations of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, provide clear verbal and written feedback and produce developmental action plans.
  • Participate in training moderation and standardisation activities to ensure accuracy and rigour in observation outcomes.
  • Help create professional development plans, develop innovative resources and contribute to department and whole‑college improvement activity.
  • Play an important role in the induction and ongoing development of teaching staff, helping to embed professional habits, reflective practice and high standards from day one.
  • Act as a key influencer in shaping the teaching culture at Barnsley College, bringing research‑informed approaches and a commitment to supporting every teacher to be their best for students.
