Job summary

The City of Liverpool College is seeking a Teaching Assistant Apprentice in Liverpool to support teaching staff and help create stimulating learning opportunities for all students. Salary is £23,195 per year and the role is a fixed-term contract for 18 months at 35 hours per week.

You will work with individuals or small groups to provide additional support, supervise students, and help maintain a safe, orderly learning environment. Applications from those new to the role are welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Support the curriculum area objectives and engage in the annual review process.
  • Stay up-to-date with subject developments and refresh knowledge yearly.
  • Assist teaching staff in planning and preparing lessons and materials.
  • Use effective teaching methods to engage and motivate students and promote independence.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Maintain procedures to promote positive behaviour and address discriminatory attitudes.
  • Assist with marking and recording of student work according to policies.
  • Monitor attendance and progress in College systems.
  • Support teaching staff in using appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.
  • Be aware of assessment procedures and assist in their implementation.
  • Develop communication skills to maximise effective interaction with students and parents.
  • Collaborate with curriculum teams to address development needs in Digital, English and Maths.
  • Participate in future training and development opportunities.

Description

Job Title: Teaching Assistant Apprentice


Department: Digital Media and Expressive Arts


Salary: £23,195.00 per year


Job Type: Fixed-term contract full-time, 35 hours per week (18 months)


As a teaching assistant your primary responsibility will be to support the teaching staff in creating effective and stimulating learning opportunities for all students. You will work closely with students to support them in achieving their academic and personal goals.


You will help to supervise and motivate students, working closely with individuals or small groups to provide additional support. You may also be required to assist with classroom management, including maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.


Overall, we welcome applications from candidates who are passionate about education and supporting student success. While experience working as a teaching assistant is preferred, we also welcome applications from individuals who are looking to gain experience in this role.


Key Responsibilities


  1. Support the curriculum area strategic objectives, actively engaging in the annual review process.

  2. Stay up-to-date with national developments in the subject areas and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.

  3. Assist teaching staff in planning and preparing high-quality lessons, providing support in the delivery of learning materials.

  4. Use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students, encouraging independence and student autonomy.

  5. Help to establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.

  6. Establish and maintain procedures with students that promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication, and respect for others, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.

  7. Support the marking and recording of student work in accordance with College and School Assessment policies.

  8. Monitor and record student progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies.

  9. Provide support to the teaching staff in the use of appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.

  10. Be aware of external/internal assessment procedures and play an appropriate part in their implementation.

  11. Evaluate and improve own communication skills to maximise effective communication and overcome barriers.

  12. Liaise with the Deputy Heads of School and curriculum teams in contributing to the administration necessary to support the teaching, learning, and assessment within the subject area.

  13. Work with colleagues with relevant expertise to identify and address additional Digital, English and Maths skills for development within the subject area.

  14. Review own professional development needs and participate fully in future training and development.

  15. Communicate and consult with parents, carers, and students, including Parent’s Evening, Welcome Evenings, events, and open evenings.

  16. Ensure that all students in the subject area comply with College’s policies and procedures.

  17. Assist in providing enrichment opportunities that are exciting, motivating and enhance the student experience.

  18. Provide support to learners with a well-prepared VLE and resources for independent study.

  19. Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the different needs of learners and effective strategies to ensure all learners make progress.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential criteria:



  1. Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College.

  2. Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.

  3. Minimum of Level 2 Literacy/Numeracy.

  4. High level of communication and interpersonal skills, an effective member of a team.

  5. Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.

  6. Strong understanding of the importance and impact of feedback on learner performance.


Desirable criteria:



  1. Knowledge and understanding of A Level, GCSE, UAL and BTEC Qualifications.

  2. Experience using ICT to support and enhance subject delivery.

  3. Successful recent previous teaching assistant experience with 11-18 year olds.

  4. Experience and understanding of ALPS and value added as progress measures.

  5. Good understanding of curriculum development to meet the training needs of employers.

  6. Experience with BTEC verification and standardisation.
