Job summary

Our independent schools and a range of tailored support programmes are targeted at young people who fall into high risk groups in all key stages, including those who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream schools or Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), and those with social, emotional and/or mental health needs (SEMH) or special educational needs (SEN).

Job Description

As the Teaching Assistant you will work in partnership with the teacher to foster effective participation of pupils in the social and academic processes of the school

Specific Responsibilities

  • Working with individual or groups of children, assist in ensuring pupils are kept on task and complete activities set by teachers.
  • Deal with behavioural and special needs issues in conjunction with the teacher
  • Delivery of SEN interventions
  • Help implement lesson plans, aims and contents with the teacher
  • Provide feedback to pupils without reference to the teacher
  • Take small class of small group of pupils for defined activities
  • Support and work with the teacher in testing / assessment
  • Carry out a specific specialist responsibility (e.g. speech therapy) and support other staff in the school when help is needed in this area
  • Brief and support new staff (including teachers) on the stage of development of pupils

General Responsibilities:

  • Taking responsibility for a whole class during the temporary absence of a teacher
  • May be trained to undertake very personal/intimate medical work for children with special need
  • Work with challenging students away from the classroom as a respite strategy
  • Work external to the school site, e.g. on trips, educational visits etc…
  • Supervision of students at breaks and lunchtimes

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Must hold a CACHE level 1
  • Level 2 teaching assistant qualification desired
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills

Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of the statutory requirements of equal opportunities, discrimination, health and safety, SEN & safeguarding of children
  • High expectations of pupils’ behaviour and clear strategies for working with challenging pupils
  • Ability to motivate and encourage children appropriately
  • Have experience of teaching children with EAL, SEN, Speech and language difficulties and other complex needs
  • Ability to work independently, supported by the teacher, with groups of or individual pupils
  • A willingness to respond flexibly to the needs of a small team

Essential personal qualities

  • The ability to develop and maintain good professional relationships
  • Good communication skills and able to clarify and explain instructions clearly
  • Commitment to raising the levels of achievement of children of all abilities
  • Be committed and be able to actively demonstrate safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Demonstrate the ability to uphold public trust and confidence and maintain appropriate positive professional boundaries in relationships with both children and adults at all times.
  • Ability to cope with emotionally demanding situations
Additional Information

Salary:Up to £25,001 per annum FTE; £17,338.67 pro rata.
Contract:30 hours per week, 39 weeks per annum, permanent
