Job summary

Longwill Primary School for Deaf Children in Birmingham is seeking a Permanent Full Time Level 2 Teaching Assistant to start 2nd November 2026. The role is 32.5 hours per week, term time only, with a salary of £24,796 - £28,142 plus SEN Point pro rata.

You will work with Teachers of the Deaf to support Deaf sign bilingual pupils, some with additional needs, and communicate in British Sign Language (minimum Level 1). Informal visits encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Must communicate in British Sign Language (minimum Level 1).
  • Experience supporting Deaf pupils in a school setting is desirable.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Support Deaf sign bilingual pupils alongside Teachers of the Deaf and fellow staff.
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming learning environment and raise standards.
  • Be flexible to meet the needs of the school and pupil group.

Our outstanding innovative and welcoming primary special school caters for children between the ages of 2 – 11 years old who are Deaf and require a sign bilingual education. We are currently funded for 65 places. The school has a national reputation as a centre of excellence in Deaf Education.

We seek to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Teaching Assistant who has high expectations for Deaf children and a firm commitment to raising standards, working alongside our Teachers of the Deaf and fellow Teaching Assistants, both Deaf and hearing.

Longwill is a small, friendly school which offers an excellent education to Deaf pupils from throughout the West Midlands and surrounding areas. We are looking for a Teaching Assistant who:

  • Thinks creatively Uses their own initiative Is enthusiastic, motivated and a lifelong learner Is able to work well in teams Support the varied and complex needs of our Deaf sign bilingual pupils, some with additional needs Can work flexibly to meet the needs of the school Has the ability to communicate in British Sign Language (minimum Level 1)
