The Role

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and high-achieving teacher to join the Geography Department of The King’s School, Gloucester. The successful candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for Geography and be able to instil a love of the subject in their pupils. Through their excellent teaching, they should be able to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation and level of understanding in all pupils.

This post is suitable for anyone from a graduate to an experienced teacher, who is seeking to engage with a range of abilities in a School with well-behaved pupils and small class sizes, ranging from 6 pupils up to a maximum of 22.

The School

The King’s School is one of the dozen oldest schools in the country and has a proud heritage dating back to at least 1087, with a re-foundation in 1541. King’s is the Cathedral School in the city of Gloucester, whilst the surrounding county is home to many excellent grammar and state schools, as well as other independent schools. King’s is held in high regard amidst this competitive area; our academic, co-curricular and pastoral attainment is second to none. As a result, the last three ISI reports for King’s have all been classified as ‘excellent’ in every area. Local media brand SoGlos has awarded King’s the title of ‘Independent School of the Year’ or ‘Highly Commended’ in every one of the last five years – a feat unmatched by any other local independent school. Despite the multiple national-scale challenges of recent years, King’s has seen its pupil roll growing steadily and parental satisfaction scoring very highly indeed. With careful investment in the campus and facilities, as well as a continuous focus on improving teaching and learning and developing our outstanding pastoral care, King’s is now seen as a dynamic, forward-thinking and impressive place to study and to work.

The Department

“Geography is the subject that holds the key to our future.”

Michael Palin, President of the Royal Geographical Society

So many of the issues at the forefront of our lives are explored through the study of Geography: migration, international development, natural disasters, climate change, globalisation and sustainability are just some examples. We address all these major topics, and many others, in our wide-ranging Geography programme.

The Geography Department at King’s is a dynamic and collaborative environment in which to work, comprising three members of teaching staff including the Head of Department. We share the teaching of Geography through Senior School, where it is a compulsory subject for those in First to Third Form, and a popular option at GCSE and A-Level.

We encourage our pupils to be curious about the world; nurturing in them a spirit of enquiry and equipping them with the ability to think critically. We expect them to progressively increase their understanding of human and physical processes on local, national and global scales. In short, Geographers at King’s are informed, considerate, inquisitive and analytical. Above all they are concerned about issues that affect not just their local area but communities and environments in other parts of the world.

Timetable, Induction and Training

The School operates to a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle. Early Career Teachers receive a 10% minimum reduction in their allocation in their first year for training and induction – this reduces to 5% in the second year of induction. The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level.
