Job description

Job Title: Teaching Assistant / Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - Behaviour Specialist Support

Grade: Grade 6 to 7 (dependent on experience and qualifications)

Contract: Fixed Term (1 Year, with potential for extension)

Hours: Part Time, Term Time Only

Location: Townhill Junior School, Southampton

Responsible To: Class Teacher, SENDCo and Headteacher

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality support for a pupil with behavioural and emotional needs, enabling them to access learning, achieve positive outcomes and participate fully in school life. The postholder will work closely with school staff, parents/carers and external agencies to implement personalised support strategies and promote positive behaviour, wellbeing and academic progress. Where appropriate, the role may also include leading interventions, supporting wider classroom learning and delivering preplanned lessons.

Key Responsibilities

Pupil Support:

  • Provide dedicated one-to-one support for a pupil with behavioural and emotional needs.
  • Develop a positive, trusting and professional relationship with the pupil.
  • Support emotional regulation and promote positive behaviour strategies.
  • Encourage independence, resilience and self-confidence.
  • Assist the pupil in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in school activities.
  • Monitor and record progress against individual targets and support plans. Teaching and Learning Support
  • Deliver targeted academic, social and emotional interventions.
  • Adapt activities and resources to meet individual learning needs.
  • Support teaching and learning within the classroom environment.
  • Lead small group activities and intervention programmes.
  • Contribute to planning and evaluating support strategies.
  • Provide classroom teaching cover and deliver pre-planned lessons where appropriate and in line with HLTA responsibilities.

Behaviour and Wellbeing:

  • Implement behaviour support plans and risk assessments.
  • Promote the school's behaviour policy and expectations.
  • Use restorative and positive behaviour approaches to support learning.
  • Support pupils in developing social skills and emotional resilience.
  • Maintain a calm and nurturing environment that enables pupils to thrive.

Partnership Working:

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENDCo, senior leaders and support staff.
  • Liaise effectively with parents and carers to promote consistent approaches.
  • Work alongside external professionals and agencies involved with the pupil.
  • Contribute to review meetings and provide feedback regarding pupil progress and wellbeing.

Safeguarding and Professional Responsibilities:

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people at all times.
  • Adhere to school policies, procedures and statutory guidance.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Engage in training, professional development and performance management processes.
  • Contribute positively to the wider life and ethos of the school.
