Job summary

Lakes College in Workington, Cumbria, is seeking a Graduate Systems & Business Intelligence Developer to join the MIS and Exams team. You’ll gain hands-on experience on real projects from day one, turning data into insights that support students and staff while shaping strategic decisions across the college.

You’ll develop skills in SQL Server, SSRS and Power BI, database development, and data integration, with a view to building a long-term career in data, analytics and systems development

Qualifications

  • GCSEs including Maths & English or equivalent.
  • Computing related degree or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.

Responsibilities

  • Developing interactive dashboards and BI reports.
  • Creating reporting solutions using SQL, SSRS and Power BI.
  • Supporting and enhancing critical college systems and data infrastructure.
  • Working with stakeholders across the organisation to deliver insights.
  • Improving data quality, automation and reporting processes.
  • Exploring new technologies and driving digital innovation.

At Lakes College, we’re looking for an ambitious Graduate Systems & Business Intelligence Developer to join our MIS and Exams Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop specialist skills in SQL, Power BI, Business Intelligence, data systems and reporting, while working alongside experienced professionals in a forward-thinking Further Education college.

As part of our Graduate Programme, you’ll gain hands‑on experience working on real projects from day one, helping to transform data into meaningful insights that support students, staff and strategic decision‑making across the College.

You’ll be supported to develop expertise in:

  • SQL Server, SSRS and Power BI
  • Database development and management
  • Business intelligence and reporting solutions
  • Data integration and systems development
  • Dashboard creation and data visualisation
  • Educational technology and student information systems

To thrive in this role you will have strong analytical and problem‑solving skills and an interest in data, technology and business intelligence. Knowledge of SQL and relational databases is essential for this role, as well as excellent communication skills and a desire to learn, innovate and develop professionally.

Experience with Power BI, reporting tools or database development would be advantageous, but your enthusiasm, curiosity and potential are just as important.

Salary in year 1: £29,429

Salary in year 2: £31,039

Qualifications

5 GCSE’s (including Maths & English or equivalent) essential

Computing Related Degree or Equivalent Experience essential

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products essential

Demonstratable knowledge of Reporting Services and SQL Server (2012 edition and later) essential

Experience

Recent and relevant industry experience in sector essential

Experience/Knowledge

Experience of data and/or reporting systems. Working with statistics. Experience of report writing essential

Understanding of the external reporting requirements of Colleges (ILR, HEIFES etc.)

Has experience of using data systems and producing reports in an educational context
