Job description

Overview

The RSSB Sustainable Development team collaborates with government and industry to ensure sustainability policy objectives across social and environmental topics are identified, understood, and managed within the rail industry. The team provides technical leadership on emissions, noise, air quality, social sustainability, inclusion, climate adaptation, and biodiversity management.

RSSB delivers industry-wide research projects, tools, and advisory services aimed at creating a more sustainable railway. It also coordinates technical sustainability working groups and industry forums. Through training and leadership development, we work with industry partners to foster a sustainability culture within GB rail.

Over 24 months, you will work across the Sustainable Development team, other RSSB departments, and the wider industry to support sustainable rail initiatives. You will gain insights into industry collaboration and sustainability challenges. You will rotate through various placements within the team, gaining broad experience and collaborating with other departments. External placements with member organizations, such as train operating companies, will also be part of your development, providing practical sustainability experience and industry relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the delivery of sustainability-focused projects across the organization.
  • Contribute to RSSB’s sustainability knowledge base.
  • Facilitate RSSB’s Sustainable Working Groups, ensuring effective coordination and outputs for members.
  • Identify and promote opportunities to embed sustainability principles throughout the rail sector.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders within the sustainability team and the wider organization to foster collaboration and alignment.
  • Support initiatives to integrate sustainability into RSSB’s internal operations and practices.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • A minimum of a 2:2 degree in environmental science, sustainability, or related field.
  • Good understanding of sustainability principles and their industry application.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for sustainability and desire to contribute to positive environmental and social change.
  • Analytical thinking skills to work with diverse information, identify patterns, and draw conclusions.
  • Systematic approach to data analysis and problem evaluation.
  • Problem-solving skills to see the big picture, think critically and creatively, and develop solutions.
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills to build positive relationships and work responsibly.
  • Effective communication skills to convey complex issues clearly to diverse audiences, and active listening skills.
  • Personal effectiveness to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and manage time.
  • Adaptability and resilience to learn from challenges and work under pressure.
  • Drive for achievement, proactive development, and goal-oriented mindset.
