Location: Oxford

At Laing O'Rourke we are shaping a lasting legacy for our clients, society, the environment, and people. As a Sustainability Manager, you will play a pivotal role in embedding sustainability across a diverse project portfolio in Oxford, with a primary focus on two landmark projects:

  • The Oxford Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT)
  • A pandemic and vaccine research centre at the University of Oxford's Old Road Campus

Leading a team of sustainability professionals, you will work closely with project leadership, delivery teams, and clients to achieve project ESG objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sustainability Strategy: Implement and drive environmental, carbon, and social value strategies to deliver innovative and high-performance sustainable solutions.
  • Team Leadership & Support: Line-manage and mentor Environmental, Social Value and Carbon Advisors, providing oversight to ensure continuous improvement, identify risks/opportunities and maximisation of ESG and KPI outcomes.
  • Stakeholder & Client Engagement: Represent sustainability at client and consultant meetings, influencing decision-making and embedding sustainability within project leadership forums.
  • Regulatory & Environmental Compliance: Ensure adherence to environmental regulations and sustainability KPIs, engaging with subcontractors to align with sustainability goals.
  • Sustainability Reporting: Collect, analyse, and present sustainability performance data, creating dashboards and reports for internal and external stakeholders, including local authorities and regulators.
  • Project Delivery Support: Provide sustainability guidance to technical, procurement, HR/recruitment, and construction teams to ensure sustainability is embedded in project methodology.

About You:

  • Proven experience in sustainability leadership within a construction or infrastructure setting.
  • Broad understanding of environmental sustainability, carbon management, and social value, including ESG reporting.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills to drive engagement across diverse teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management experience, particularly with regulators, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Proficiency in data collation, performance reporting, and auditing.
  • Ability to align sustainability initiatives with project cost, programme, and design considerations.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001, PAS 2080, and knowledge of BREEAM, environmental consenting, and ecology management (beneficial).
  • A relevant degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong time management, organisational skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
