Our client is a leading main contractor delivering major construction and technical projects across the UK. They are seeking a Sustainability Lead to join their team and play a key role in driving environmental and sustainability performance across their portfolio.

The successful candidate will act as the project sustainability subject matter expert — supporting construction operations, guiding project teams through BREEAM, LEED and Low Carbon Construction requirements, and ensuring the business continues to build in line with its sustainability strategy.

Responsibilities
Project Compliance
  • Serve as the key contact for assigned projects, providing sustainability and environmental guidance to construction teams.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of internal sustainability and environmental training.
  • Monitor and report monthly on project sustainability performance and progress.
  • Support teams with planning conditions and sustainability KPIs.
  • Undertake site visits and inspections to ensure compliance and promote best practice.
  • Produce project environmental and sustainability documentation such as Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) and Pollution Incident Response Plans.
Building & Project Certification
  • Support teams in understanding and achieving certification targets (BREEAM, LEED).
  • Engage with the supply chain to ensure certification evidence is gathered on time.
  • Manage and maintain certification trackers to ensure compliance and auditability.
  • Act as the main point of contact for clients and consultants regarding certification progress and requirements.
  • Identify and elevate risks to meeting certification targets.
  • Share knowledge and promote process improvement across the business for BREEAM and other certifications.
Sustainability Strategy
  • Support the Head of ESG with delivery and performance monitoring of the company’s sustainability strategy.
  • Integrate sustainability objectives into day‑to‑day project operations.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Environmental Management System and ESG documentation.
  • Champion continuous improvement and drive sustainability initiatives across the business.
Requirements
  • Strong understanding of sustainability standards and frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED, and ISO 14001.
  • Experience working on construction projects with a sustainability or environmental focus.
