Overview

The role of the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is critical in delivering quality patient care and an unrivalled client experience through teamwork, clear communication and utilisation of your knowledge and skills.

You will be a key member of the nursing team, working collaboratively with a variety of team members including veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, and members of the leadership team. You will work under the delegation of a Vet or Registered Veterinary Nurse to support patient care.

Main purpose & goals

  • Deliver high-quality patient care, utilising your developing experience and skills.
  • Work within the Linnaeus ‘What can PCAs do in Veterinary Practice’ guidelines.
  • Work and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients. Demonstrate the ability to be reliable, adaptable, understanding, and empathetic.
  • Maintain accurate client and patient records.
  • Contribute to an outstanding client experience.
  • Always provide an efficient, courteous, and helpful service to all clients, suppliers, and external contacts.
  • Promote and lead a culture of respect, collaboration, and engagement in the practice team to support well-being, quality, and productivity.
  • Uphold and engage in Clinical Standards & Quality Improvement and demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development (CPD).
  • Understand and adhere to practice and group policies and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the financial health of the business by understanding and controlling costs in the areas that PCAs can impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Undertake all PCA duties within the practice, utilising your skills to maximise the provision of patient care within the remit of your role and experience, working under the delegation of a Vet or Registered Veterinary Nurse.
  • Ensure accurate clinical record keeping, including hospitalisation forms and clinical notes.
  • Uphold the premises and patient areas to a high clinical standard, adhering to stringent infection control protocols and maintenance of equipment, reporting any faults or damage.
  • Work alongside the veterinary, nursing, and client care teams to deliver an efficient quality service. Be accountable for any specific tasks or responsibilities delegated.
  • Responsible for improving quality patient care by engaging with feedback from site-level and group-level audits, contributing to incident reporting and reviewing.
  • Engage with and deliver high-quality patient care initiatives.
  • Participate in relevant CPD appropriate to your role, engage with Linnaeus, and in-house training opportunities. Actively share learning with team members contributing to improving patient care.
