Job description

About The Role

The Support Worker will provide a structured, personalised resettlement service to every service user at Mildmay House. The aim is to support service users who have experienced homelessness to move into their own homes in a planned and supported way.

They will offer advice, training, information, and one-to-one/group support to help service users through this process. Support may include advice on housing rights, accompanying individuals to meetings, and practical assistance such as obtaining furniture and setting up payment plans for household bills.

The role ensures that service users ready to move on are given the security and support to maximise their independence, dignity, and choice, in line with the project’s objectives.

Please note: this is a full-time role working on a rota basis—typically a week of day shifts, a week of night shifts, and working every other weekend.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Providing information on housing options, assisting with applications, advocating with housing providers, and accompanying clients to interviews and viewings.
  2. Acting as a key-worker for a caseload of residents, supporting them to take ownership of their journey.
  3. Providing practical help to move in, including managing benefit claims, liaising with support services, and assisting with domestic setups.
  4. Conducting strengths-based assessments, co-producing person-centred plans, and supporting clients to achieve their goals.
  5. Developing relationships with external agencies that can support service user needs, such as housing providers, health services, and charitable trusts.

About the Service:

Mildmay House is a 47-bed supported accommodation for single homeless males and females aged 16 and above, from diverse backgrounds. The environment is designed to be warm, respectful, and supportive, helping clients transition towards independent living.

About You

A Support Worker should share Salvation Army Homes’ values of love, help, and effectiveness. You will need to:

  • Have experience or knowledge related to working with homeless people.
  • Experience in overcoming barriers to resettlement.
  • Ability to network with external agencies and develop partnerships.
  • Handle complex situations successfully.
  • Understand action plans, personal development, and risk assessments.
  • Be a confident communicator, resilient, and able to build trust.
  • Take an asset-based approach to empower individuals.
