Job summary

Gold Fields is seeking a senior Planning Engineer to lead the Planning Engineering Department across multiple underground operations at St Ives, WA. You will oversee mine planning activities, ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective extraction of gold resources.

You will drive production profiles from short-term implementation through to medium-term Life of Mine strategy, collaborating with technical and operations teams to optimise performance and value.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Extensive underground mining experience with exposure to open pit desirable.
  • Experience developing operationally ready mine designs and schedules and managing engineering workflows.
  • Strong leadership and ability to mentor multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive mine plans considering geology, ore body, geotechnical criteria and constraints to optimize recovery.
  • Collaborate with technical and operational teams to enhance mining performance, safety and efficiency.
  • Review and update mine plans to align with exploration outcomes and annual business objectives.
  • Monitor KPI and mining costs, identify improvements and implement cost-saving measures.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities to team members.
  • Communicate regularly with senior management on mine planning, production forecasts and KPIs.
  • Foster continuous improvement and innovation within mine planning and production processes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Unit Manager: Technical Services at St Ives, you will be responsible for the leadership of the Planning Engineering Departments across multiple underground operations, playing a crucial role in overseeing and optimizing mine planning activities to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective extraction of gold resources.

You will contribute to organisational success by delivering an optimal production profile from underground mining operations through pragmatic, effective, and collaborative mine planning covering short-term (implementation) through to medium-term requirements aligned to the Life of Mine (LOM) and strategic direction of the business.

Up to six months’ free, company-provided accommodation may be available for eligible candidates from under-represented groups (for example, women in mining and Indigenous Australians) relocating to Kambalda for permanent roles.

Accommodation includes basic furnishings and utilities and is subject to availability and housing policy, with support available to assist with transitioning to a lease after the initial six-month period. Eligibility and final terms will be discussed during the recruitment process

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and implement comprehensive mine plans, considering geological data, ore body characteristics, geotechnical criteria, and mining constraints to optimize gold recovery.
  • Work closely with technical and operational teams to optimize mining performance, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence standards.
  • Collaboratively review and update mine plans to leverage off ongoing exploration, performance, and operational feedback aligning operations to annual business objectives and LOM strategy.
  • Monitor and analyse KPI’s and mining costs, identifying improvement areas and implementing cost-saving measures where possible.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, training, and development opportunities to team members.
  • Communicate regularly with senior management, providing updates on mine planning activities, production forecasts, and key performance indicators.
  • Foster a culture of business and continuous improvement by regularly identifying and pursuing opportunities for process improvement and innovation within the mine planning and production process.
What You’ll Bring
  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • Extensive displayed mining experience with extensive underground engineering exposure, open pit desirable and within gold
  • Experience and demonstrated understanding of developing operationally ready mine designs and schedules, managing engineering workflows, and technical study work.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to support a multidisciplinary team
  • Proficient in mining software including Deswik.CAD, Deswik.Sched, Ventsim, and Microsoft Office
  • Valid Australian Driver’s Licence
