Subject Leader – Graduate Diploma, MA, MFA Creative Writing
West Dean College of Arts and Conservation
Location: West Dean, West Sussex
Salary: £40,000 - £42,000 per annum pro-rata
Hours: Part Time (0.4 FTE – 14 hours per week)
Contract Type: Permanent

West Dean College is internationally recognised for delivering world-class, practice-based education in the creative arts, conservation, and design. Based in the stunning surroundings of the South Downs National Park and with a growing presence in Bloomsbury, London, the College offers an immersive learning experience that is intellectually and creatively rich.

We are seeking an outstanding Subject Leader in Creative Writing to lead and develop our validated Graduate Diploma, MA, and MFA Creative Writing programmes. This is a pivotal role within the School of Arts, combining academic leadership, teaching excellence, and strategic oversight.

The Role

As Subject Leader, you will take responsibility for the planning, organisation, and delivery of our Creative Writing programmes. You will work closely with tutors, visiting lecturers, and writers-in-residence to ensure the programmes are coherent, innovative, and relevant to both academic and industry contexts.

You will contribute to teaching, assessment, curriculum development, and the broader academic life of the College, while also supporting the recruitment and progression of students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and delivery of GD, MA, and MFA Creative Writing programmes
  • Manage and support academic staff and visiting professionals
  • Deliver engaging and research-informed teaching and assessment
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and contribute to quality assurance processes
  • Provide academic guidance and pastoral support to students
  • Promote the programmes through outreach and recruitment events
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the College and contribute to the academic community.

The Person

We are looking for a committed and inspiring academic professional with experience in leading or coordinating higher education programmes. You should bring a strong track record in Creative Writing practice, a deep understanding of the subject area, and a passion for fostering student success.

Essential Criteria:

  • MA or equivalent Level 7 qualification/professional experience
  • Proven record of publication and Creative Writing practice
  • Substantial experience of teaching in Higher Education
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of the creative writing and publishing sectors
  • Proficiency with IT tools and administrative systems

Desirable:

  • Experience with VLEs and blended/hybrid delivery
  • PGCert HE or Fellowship of the HEA
  • PhD or equivalent research profile
  • Understanding of quality assurance processes in HE
