Job summary

The Scottish Sun, part of News UK, is seeking a fast-paced sub-editor to sharpen copy, craft punchy headlines, and ensure accuracy and legal compliance across print content.

You will rewrite and tighten stories to fit layout lengths, collaborate with writers and desk heads, and stay up to date with current affairs and trends. Experience in tabloid storytelling and rapid delivery under tight deadlines is essential.

Your role: Step into a fast-paced, print sub-editing role where you will sharpen, polish and perfect copy in keeping with The Scottish Sun's inimitable, succinct style. You will craft punchy, eye-catching headlines while ensuring every page meets the highest standards of accuracy, style and legal compliance. A talent for spotting hidden gems in reams of copy is a must.


Day to day you will:



  • Polish print copy while correcting spelling, grammar and style inconsistencies.


  • Rewrite and tighten story content so it is punchy, engaging and meets specific layout lengths.


  • Craft compelling, standout headlines and captions. Headlines make The Scottish Sun stand out from the opposition and our production staff are master craftsmen and women of the English language.


  • Be a meticulous fact checker to guarantee stories are accurate and legally compliant.


  • Collaborate with writers, reporters, and desk heads to resolve copy queries while keeping the Chief Sub updated.


  • Propose fresh angles and creative approaches to incoming stories.


  • Stay up to date with current affairs, trends and popular culture.



What we're looking for from you:



  • A significant background in subbing for a national or regional daily newspaper.


  • A proven track record in tabloid storytelling and a familiarity with working at speed with accuracy and attention to detail.


  • Solid working knowledge of media law and regulatory guidelines.


  • A flair for the English language.


  • Drive and a sense of humour. You will be a stickler for the impeccable standards for which The Scottish Sun is renowned and have a cool head under pressure.


  • Willingness to work flexibly across a seven-day rota towards tight deadlines.
