Job description

The Student Community Assistant plays a key role in enhancing the student experience by delivering pre-planned community building events in both halls of residence and around the city. Working without direct supervision during events, this role ensures events are delivered smoothly, creates a welcoming environment and engages students meaningfully. The position is designed for current students who are passionate about creating positive student communities where students feel a sense of belonging.

What will you be doing?

You will:

  • Deliver a range of centrally planned events that promote student belonging and community.
  • Travel to different locations (such as Manor Hall, Hiatt Baker Hall, The Lanes, Indoor Sports Centre, We the Curious etc.) to deliver an average of two weekday evening events each week.
  • Lead a small team of student ambassadors to ensure smooth event setup, delivery, and pack down.
  • Create inclusive, welcoming environments and respond to on-the-day issues independently.
  • Read event briefs and follow the guidance that has been prepared for how to run each event.
  • Carry out health and safety checks and document student engagement and feedback.
  • Make public announcements to groups of attendees.
  • Attend training and team meetings to stay aligned with event procedures and goals.
You should apply if

You are:

  • Passionate about student experience – you care about helping students feel welcome, included, and connected.
  • Confident in event delivery – you have experience (or enthusiasm) for running events, from setup to pack down, and enjoy being hands-on.
  • Comfortable with learning new things – one week you might run a macrame keychain workshop, the next you might run a pool social at a sports bar.
  • A natural team leader – you’re comfortable guiding a small team (like student ambassadors) and can keep things running smoothly.
  • Organised and proactive – you can handle logistics, follow procedures, and solve problems on the spot.
  • Inclusive and student-focused – you value diversity and are committed to creating environments where all students feel they belong.
