Job description

About the job.

National Highways has an excellent opportunity for a Structures Engineer to join our Asset Management division within Operations. As a Structures Engineer, you will primarily assist with managing our structures by identifying asset needs and producing/reviewing risk management plans. The role will also involve project management tasks, such as managing budgets and the supply chain, to maintain our assets in line with DMRB standards.

The Structures Engineer may also develop treatment options, undertake preliminary design work, or conduct structural reviews and assessments, ensuring adherence to asset policies and standards.

This role can be based at Wakefield, Darlington, or Leeds offices on a hybrid basis.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and must have a full driving licence with no more than 3 points to be considered.

  • Identify, prepare survey briefs, and support the delivery of structural survey works to support asset improvement, assessment, and renewal.
  • Monitor assessment work delivery, liaising with technical partners, and support the delivery of treatment options with relevant teams.
  • Develop early solutions for improvements or renewals, including compiling documents, evidence, and option reports for value management, considering new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • Undertake structural reviews in accordance with CS 451 and assessments following DMRB standards.
  • Assist in developing the regional asset-led forward programme, initial scheme development, customer-centric designs, and technical specifications.

About you.

  • Degree or HND in a relevant discipline with appropriate experience, or equivalent, and working towards a professional membership.
  • Experience in structures studies, renewals design, or structural assessment; experience working within budgets and creating budgets for scheme development (desirable).
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills with a customer focus.
  • Knowledge of National Highways standards (DMRB, MCHW, Eurocodes) and their application.
  • Knowledge of CDM 2015.
