Job summary

Reed Specialist Recruitment is seeking a Test Technician in Welwyn Garden City to join a growing engineering team working on load testing and monitoring projects across the UK. The role is on-site with occasional travel and no direct load testing experience is required but a practical, hands-on approach is essential and full training is provided.

You will set up tests, record findings, install monitoring systems and liaise with clients.

Qualifications

• Good GCSEs with Maths/Physics or an engineering qualification.
• Practical, hands-on ability with hand tools or equipment.
• Reliable, detail-focused and able to work independently.
• Full manual driving licence is required.
• Welding or soldering/STEM degree is beneficial but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Set up and carry out load tests on structures and components at client sites.

• Communicate with clients by phone and email to discuss requirements.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Test Technician to join a growing specialist engineering team working on varied structural testing and monitoring projects across the UK, with occasional overseas travel. This Test Technician role is ideal for someone practical, hands-on and keen to build a career in engineering while working on-site rather than in an office. No direct load testing experience is required, but you should be motivated, adaptable and ready to learn.

Day-to-day of the role

• Set up and carry out load tests on structures and components, often at client sites.
• Record findings accurately and complete results sheets and basic reports.
• Install monitoring systems for a range of engineering projects.
• Speak with clients by phone and email to understand requirements and discuss practical solutions.
• Work on a wide variety of structures, including beams, barriers, floors, bridges, handrails and fixings.
• Help maintain, prepare and improve testing equipment.
• Work closely with colleagues, contractors and clients on-site.
• Travel to sites across the UK, with occasional overnight stays, early starts or weekend/night work depending on project needs.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Good GCSEs as a minimum, ideally including Maths, Physics, or a relevant engineering qualification such as Mechanical or Civil Engineering NVQ.
• Practical, hands-on ability and confidence using hand tools or engineering/construction equipment.
• Previous technician experience is helpful, but keen home hobbyists will also be considered.
• Honest, reliable and detail-focused, with the ability to work independently.
• Comfortable working outdoors, at height, in confined spaces and carrying out manual lifting.
• Good communication skills, including written English for basic report writing.
• Competent with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Teams.
• Flexible approach to working hours and travel.
• Full manual driving licence required.
• Welding, soldering or a relevant STEM degree would be beneficial but not essential.
