Job Description

We are offering opportunities for Structural Integrity Engineers - Submarines, available in full-time and part-time roles, based in Cardiff. We support the Royal Navy as the technical authority for naval reactor plants and are growing our submarine and nuclear capabilities.

As a structural integrity engineer, your main tasks will include structural assessments such as primary strength, fatigue, crack growth, and fracture assessments, following ASME III and R6 codes. You will support various programs, from in-service to new builds, and develop Finite Element Analysis models to analyze stresses and justify components.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical assessments, including linear and non-linear finite element analyses.
  • Use hand calculations, commercial FEA tools (mainly Abaqus), and bespoke analysis codes.
  • Develop and substantiate component designs, support lifecycle management, and submarine programs.
  • Create and implement assessment methodologies for submarine nuclear components.
  • Communicate assessment results effectively to diverse audiences within Rolls-Royce, industry partners, and clients.

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering, physics, or mathematics.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Interest and expertise in structural integrity analysis.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of failure mechanisms and assessment methods.
  • Experience with finite element methods (preferably Abaqus) for structural assessment.
  • Understanding of linear and non-linear events.
  • Experience with industry-standard FEA tools like Abaqus, ANSYS, HyperMesh.
  • Experience in safety-critical industries, supporting safety cases or compliance with codes like ASME III, R6.
  • Membership or associate membership in relevant professional bodies, working towards chartership.
