Job summary

An established engineering consultancy in Stockport is seeking a Structural Examiner to join their Rail & Highway Structure teams. The role involves planning structural examinations, reviewing reports, and mentoring junior staff. Candidates should have Chartered Engineer status and experience with infrastructure assets. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver structural examinations according to Network Rail standards.
  • Review reports to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Provide engineering recommendations for asset management.
  • Conduct QA reviews on reports prior to submission.
  • Support and train junior engineers and examiners.
  • Support and train engineers and examiners to raise reporting standards and STE competencies.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Manager to align delivery with project goals.
  • Liaise with contractors to access challenging locations safely (at height, in confined spaces).
  • Contribute to a varied workload across rail and highway bridge projects.
  • Support a close-knit team culture with the resources of a national consultancy.

Skills

About the role

We are looking for Structural Examiners to join our Rail & Highway Structure teams based in Stockport. You’ll be part of a small, close-knit team contributing to the safety and resilience of the UK’s critical infrastructure.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with ICE, IStructE, or similar (or working towards).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in structural inspection, assessment, or asset management of infrastructure assets.
  • STE4/STE5 competence.
  • A valid UK driving license and willingness to travel nationally.
  • Previous experience with bridges, culverts, retaining walls, tunnels, or other major infrastructure assets.
  • Confidence in mentoring junior staff and providing constructive feedback.

Key responsibilities:
